fingerprint/security software - can I disable?
fingerprint/security software - can I disable?
I have a brand new T60p 15.4" running XP Pro SP2. On this new laptop I seem to have the security features enabled. When I start up it says "waiting for services" and then I can log in with my fingerprint.
On my other (work) laptop, a T60p 14", also running XP Pro SP2, I seem to have different configuration installed. I do have the "log in via fingerprint" thing working on that laptop but I don't get all the other annoying "waiting for services" and "authenticating user" dialogs.
How can I get my new laptop to behave like the old one? I don't want all that other stuff -- just the fingerprint login feature. I'm not sure how I managed to get the new laptop to have all this other junk on it.
On the new laptop I attempted to stop the "thinkpad pm service" and "tss core service" services but then when I locked my computer, I wasn't able to log back in and I had to reboot (good thing I only "stopped" the services but didn't "disable" them so they came back up after a reboot).
Any suggestions?
Thanks

the Thinkpad PM Device is the Thinkpad power management so that has nothing to do with the figerprint and is needed to manage your battery.
The other is the security stuff. You can uninstall CSS which would probably cure most of that or just format the system and install only what you want... that way it's perfect.

hmm, for some reason I was thinking "pm" was password manager, which I find very annoying.SHoTTa35 wrote:the Thinkpad PM Device is the Thinkpad power management so that has nothing to do with the figerprint and is needed to manage your battery.

thanks for the tips -- I'm wondering if when I uninstall CSS I can still do the fingerprint login...
i did a fresh install of the OS on my machine and only installed the FP software and my FP works great. Surely i can't log into websites with just a swipe of my finger but that's what the rest of my fingers are for... they type! I just wanted it to use to log into the system, once that's there i don't need it for other passwords, that's just lazy

My 2-cents worth of experience:
I am running Vista Business on my main internal hard drive. Since I installed Client Security Solution (CSS) and the Fingerprint software (which are related but independent) when I first installed Vista I've had never-ending trouble with CSS. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it to no avail. The program keeps trying to run at startup and asks me to log in with my fingerswipe, which I do, and then it says "user could not be enrolled".
Made me crazy. So, I uninstalled CSS. Now, I still have the fingerprint functionality (which is what I want) but have "given up" the website password management function (which I don't care about). Problem solved.
Seems to me like Lenovo has some fixes to make to CSS for Vista as well as to their SoundMax HD driver (which also doesn't work). It also would be very, very nice if they got the Utimaco SafeGuard PrivateDisk program working under Vista. That program was the only thing I really cared about in terms of the CSS (besides the fingerprint reader).
Hope this helps. Questions? Write to me....

The sound is muted no matter what you do. This bug was confirmed by other users on this forum (that is, they had the same issue on their T60s). Perhaps it works on T61s or some other variable is in play. I just couldn't get it to work despite repeated removals, reboots, and reinstallations.

Same here. Two days I spent trying to get that 'security' system working. Now it's tossed in the bin my TP and I are much happier. The program keeps trying to run at startup and asks me to log in with my fingerswipe, which I do, and then it says "user could not be enrolled".
