Can i install 4GB Mem. on 32 bit Vista Business OS., or will it just recognize up to 3GB.

Yes, you can install 4GB, and yes, it will use 3GB or 3.5GB depending on the system.

X61Tablet with 4GB shows 3062MB under Windows Vista Ultimate. The PAE setting doesn't make a difference, with or without DEP. Seems it requires the P965 not the G series to work. Guess we have to go to 64-bit!

Vista 64 will not run with 4 GB or greater memory installed.

Thats a funny thing that Microsoft forgot to tell its custommers

32-bit Vista is documented as not being able to run 4GB by Microsoft, as are other OSes by other vendors. It is documented that 64-bit Vista and XP will run 4GB on Core 2 Duo machines, esp. these Santa Rosa CPUs, AFAIK. If you have a reference for your assertion, please prove it's true (and I hope it is not) by providing links, etc.

BTW, to learn about PAE (physical address extension - Windows boot option), DEP (Data Execution Protection - BIOS setting), and other limits, here are good links to start with. There are also fairly recent threads in this forum and the Vista forums about PAE.

The 8086, with its 20-bit addressing space of 1MB. Some was reserved for BIOS, and some more for I/O, and you're left with 640K for RAM. Bank-switching allows for more memory.

It's exactly the same, except with a 32-bit addressing space, there's a total of 4GB of addresses. Some is reserved for BIOS, some for I/O and you're left with 3.5GB of RAM. (I wonder if it's 3GB+640K...)

So you can either use bank-switching of some kind (hopefully just ONE kind like PAE so all the machines are compatible) or start using 64-bit processors.

I have Win XP Pro SP3 as shows below: (It shows PAE, but I dont have it enabled in Boot.ini)

Simply speaking, keeping to Win XP 32 (might be a little while before I go for Win7 64 straight away) how can I maximize the RAM. Do I get 4G or 3.5 or something?

Please give me the quick and dirty of how to enable the PAE etc.. stuff if its not already enabled.

It the hardware is capable of 64-bits, then 64-bit OS's will run on it *and* provide for full 4Gb usage - Vista Business 64-bit and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit both.

My T61p is such a machine, has 4Gb and it is all recognized. .... JDH
