Hey guys, I bought a 100 gig hdd for my T60. Does that mean if i want to replace it, i have to take out the 60? And can anyone please give me instruction on where the hard drive is located and stuff. I searched google but they dont have a single thing on replace the T60 hard drive, Thanks

where did you google? can't be on google.com? That's one of the easiest things to find.

Eitherway, the HD is located on the right side of the palmrest (where it gets nice and warm) a single screw holds the cover in place which also helps to remove the drive. Unscrew the old one and replace it with the 100GB install your Windows and be happy You can also buy the ultrabay slim HD adapter which allows you to put the extra HD (whichever one that is) where your DVD drive is now so you'll have 2 HDs in there.

I've only replaced an HD with one directly from IBM.

Will any 2.5" SATA drive work on a T60?

I mean, does the Active Hard Drive protection or thinkpad security features sometimes cause an incompatibility with an OEM drive sourced elsewhere? (eg., from newegg or tigerdirect)

Yes, any standard SATA drive will work fine. The HD protection is built into the system, not the hard drive. The *60 series systems have no problems with other manufacturers' drives.

(Now, if I could find an X61s to buy in Canada, I could upgrade it to a 7K200 ... oooh, the speed! )

FYI - there are some drives now with built in protection. I think some of the WD Scorpio and the Samsung Spinpoint have it built in, but as Tom said, any SATA drive will work just fine.

As for 7200RPM drives in laptops, untill 7200 behaves like the 5400 ones we have now (in terms of power draw since some 5400 drives draw less power than some of the older 4200 ones out there) then i'll upgrade then. 7200 would give the system a nice boost i'm sure but that extra 30mins would come in handy especially if i'm on the road or at a coffee shop not near an outlet or they are all taken!! (happened yesterday)

The difference in power consumption between comparable 5400 and 7200 rpm drives (at least from Hitachi) is only about 0.2W. That's about 2% on the X60/X61 power consumption scale, and less on a T60/T61.

So if you start off with, say, five hours of battery life on a T61, you might lose five minutes with a 7K100 or 7K200.

It's the GPU that's the killer for power consumption ...

I second the observation that just about any sata hdd works fine. I upgraded my 5400hdd 100gb to a 5400 perpendicular hdd 80gb, then a 5400 perpendicular 120gb, and havent looked back since. As mentioned above, just remove the one screw on the underside of your t60, and pull the hdd out. I would highly recommend talking to bontistic on here to get some OEM t60 hdd caddies and rubber rails, which are a little different than the other Txx series hdd caddies, and purchasing the SATA adaptor so you can run your oem hdd and the new hdd together. I find this configuration more useful for about 95% of the time...I rarely ever use the dvd drive anymore.

Oh, and be sure to make a copy of your rescue and recovery reinstall cd/dvds so you can install a new copy on your new hdd, and delete the partition on your old hdd.

Hey I put in the new HDD but when i reboot it, it said something about establishing some stuff then it doesnt work, like it doesnt recognize that there's a drive in there. Do i have to install something into that drive first?

did you install the drive right? turn off the system and then 'put your ear there then turn it on and see if you hear the HD spinup

Did you clone your old drive to your new drive or reinstall from the recovery CD's?
