Rescue and Recovery 4 on XP

When I downgraded to XP I lost access to my system partition (it's still there) via the Blue Thinkpad button on boot. I was told to install R&R for XP to re-enable the function.

So far I have been unable to get the install to work. It gets almost all the way through then at the end, it says the installation has been interupted and then it rolls back the install.

I have stopped all AV and malware scanners as well as all non-essential services prior to trying the install and have had no luck. I have no idea what is interfering with the install.

Lenovo support was not very helpful, as they told me they have not heard of this one. After verifying I was using the correct install package, they kind of threw up their hands and said if they found anything new they would call me back. Has anyone else tried this?

Also if Lenovo should happen to read this, they should take a page from Dell's handbook and make a step-by-step information page for the correct order to install all drivers and software for a set OS to get the system up and working properly. I have found this most helpful when re-installing the OS on my Dell laptops.

I don't have an immediate solution to your problem, but as far as installing XP goes have you visited this site?

Yes I did.

The system just does weird thing at times. Twice it has screwed up NTFS folder permissions on updates after installing a program. Once when I was running Vista and did the update to Adobe Acrobat 8, the other under XP after installing Lenovo System Update 3. In both cases the programs would not work after they were updated, saying that access was denied or the program was not found.

The folder permissions in both cases were blank, so nobody had access, including the local system service. I had to in both cases manually add the permissions back to the folder and all subfolders.

really weird.

I have nothing to back this up, but... when I was trying to troubleshoot my problems with CSS8, I remember reading that this was due to permission issues that stemmed from CSS8.

Have you tried uninstalling CSS8?

Hi, i was running into same problems going to XP PRO from Vista my T61 had.

Read here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

Thing is you need to install R&R v.3.1 and then to v4.0
It worked for me, but i don't understand why i did it, it's pretty much useless since i made recovery media from the preinstalled OS

Thanks Sokos, I'll give it a try.

I did make the rescue discs but it is much easier and quicker if you can recover from the hidden service partition.

There could be multiple reasonss. I loss access to my hidden partion on my X60 tablet using window XP. IF you are trying to do a factory restore try this...

Down from lenovo the Base Software Adminstrator (2MB) here

What the Base Software Adminstrator does is to allow you to create two files that can be written into the hideen partiiton. One is the manifest files which contain the files you want to install. I moved almost EVERY thinkvantage and crapware to the 'restricted' area. Leave the system and devices intact in the 'required' and 'opitonal area.

The second is allow you to customised XP with your name, Adminstrator password, zone etc etc.

You can choose to 'restore to factory settings/custom settings' as an option

Now, the magic is this: Once you 'deploy' one or both files to the hidden area, you can choose the option to 'automatically' launch the factory restore once you reboot. ie , you don't have ot press the blue button or F11.

NOTE: Remember to backup your data and files needed out to another USB drive because the factory restore will wipe out everything.

NOTE2: This works for XP hidden parition, let me know if your Vista thing work.
