Another new T61 thread...

#1 Post by cshbc » Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:44 am

I would love to say I am another completely satisfied customer but Lenovo keeps me coming up a little short.

The important specs of my build are:
7662-CTO
14.1 WSXGA+ w/cam
2.2GHz
2GB ram
Turbo Memory (probably a waste after reading some of the posts)
140 Nvidia card
Dual layer DVD
and finally 100GB 7200 rpm drive w/Vista Ultimate.

I ordered my T61 on 5/28 and we are all aware of the issues Lenovo had/have recently with fulfilling orders. The absolute worse part was the lack communication and lack of knowledge from the CSR's. Having said that, I received my T61 on 6/26, which actually I did not mind having to wait it, but again the lack of communication really tainted this part transaction.

Once I saw the order was shipped it took 2 days to go from Hong Kong to PA! How great was that? They updated shipping without even a phone call! :) Kudos. The only problem was the shipper restriction that prevented you from being able to go to UPS and pick up if the delivery was missed, unless you called Lenovo who in turn called UPS! :? Oh well, nonetheless I got my T61 on the day it was scheduled to be delivered.

Upon opening the box I notice a slim sleek machine that felt just right in my hands. (btw, I've got the IBM Thinkpad logo) When I opened it up, my first impression was wow, what a waste of space on the top and left bezel. Couldn't they have used it a little better, or at least centered the panel?

The machine runs exceptionally well, and seems to handle Vista like a champ. I do not like the lack of documentation from Lenovo but hey you can download it right? Supposedly you can but currently the FTP server is down, another mark for Lenovo.

The screen leaves a little something to be desired, it seems a little darker than it should be. The input devices are solid, gotta love the feel of the keyboard. Almost a little too sterile but very effective. I love the media card reader what a PLUS!! :) There are some crafstmanship issues such as the little cover that holds the power and ThnkVantage button is slightly bulged like it was forced in there and does not fit properly. Ever so slight but ya notice.

To bad they don't have the camera setup completely for Vista but hey, you can't win them all.

All in all I really love the machine, but one thing is holding my back from giving it a 100% satisfaction (even with the delay in shipping), I received mine with a dead pixel. One lousy dead pixel on the screen and I can't seem to get past that. I called support and of course they give you the 9 pixel story for return but I really hoped that a 2k system would not have a dead pixel on delivery! Once I get over that or figure a way around their 9 pixel issue I'll be 100%! lol :)

any suggestions on the dead pixel? :) I tried "unsticking" it but it does not seem to work. Also, if I light press on the panel about an inch to the right using a soft cloth it goes away, of course until I stopping pressing. (does that offer me any other clues)

Does anyone have any good documentation on the password manage and client security solution? I'm having a heck of a time setting up p/ws for web pages using the fingerprint reader.

I thought a purchaser of a Thinkpad direct from Lenovo has the right to return a new unit for any reason whatsoever even if not defective within 30 days of receiving the unit? If so, you could just return the unit and order another if the dead pixel is bothering you.

no - Lenovo charges restocking fees now and I believe you have only 20 days rather than 30.

Sounds like your pixel is simply stuck, not dead. You could try repeated massaging or the software that flashes colors on the screen to try and unstick the pixel. Leave that running overnight and you might get lucky. No idea where to find the software, however. Someone else might have a link.

Yes you can get rid of the stuck pixel. You do the same procedure, instead of removing the pressure on the cloth to the LCD, you would move the cloth on the screen still making a slight pressure, see where the movement of the cloth causes the fixed stuck pixel to not come again (ie. rub to the top right, top left, bottom left/down) until you can manage to have a 0% stuck pixels on your screen. I do this procedure every now and then when a red stuck pixel appear randomly on my SXGA+ screen.

UPDATE!!!!!! I removed the stuck pixel this evening. For the record I'm not some rain man that needs to have it perfect, but for a $2k machine a dead/stuck pixel out of the box is unacceptale for me.

Anywho, I found a 3rd method that was the magic pill for me.

See tapping method!

I'm soooo happy.. still unhappy that is happened, that I received it like this and leary of the future of this panel but hey for now, life is good!
