T61 XP SP2 no audio
T61 XP SP2 no audio
Hi,
I installed XP SP2 on my T61 that orginally came with Vista. However, the audio is not working even though I installed the KB888111 patch first, and the audio driver (SoundMax). An audio icon is displayed in the toolbars, and I am able to adjust the volume up and down but there is just no sound. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Install Thinkvantage system update, it should take care of every available drivers for your system.

Try Windows Update and see if it finds what's missing.
You can also try and reinstall the audio driver from Lenovo's page. BTW, when you installed the driver from Lenovo's site, if you manually downloaded the driver, you have to extract it's contents to your hard drive first by running or double-clicking on the download. Next you have to go to the directory where the files were extracted to in C:\Drivers\ and run Setup.exe to actually install the driver.

Common Microsoft Windows XP update modules (US only)
One other thing, I see that you need DirectX 9.0C or later before installing either of the above. Go to Start > Run and type in dxdiag and click OK. What version shows up?

Well, if you can't get it working, then the only thing I can suggest at this point is to start over from the beginning. Do a fresh install of Windows, reboot, install the Intel Chipset drivers, reboot, install the ACPI Power Management driver, reboot, make sure DirectX is version 9.0C or later then install the 888111 QFE - Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver, reboot, then install the Audio driver, reboot. In other words, reboot between each install.
You will also need the Hotkey Features driver and I believe the Video driver to see the onscreen display of your volume level.

I had similar problems with the T60, but I installed 888111US.exe which is not a Microsoft patch, but a driver, then I installed the audio driver. The driver is in the C:\IBMTOOLS directory in the preload. It is not available from IBM's site or from Microsoft. It sounds like KB888111 is just a poor Microsoft version of the real thing.
Since I posted the link to the Windows Update Modules above, I discovered a better download link for the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver (Q888111) for Windows XP with Service Pack 2. The link below includes non-US ThinkPads as well.

Slipstream SP3 into XP installation directory? I've never had a problem installing XP with SP3 slipstreamed.
Or install XP SP2 and immediately install SP3. Then proceed to do the normal drivers installations.
BTW, if XP is 'too old', why are you installing it with SP2?

Re: T61 XP SP2 no audio
Fixed my issue with the R61 - installed the Micros..t HD audio patch from hp.com (intended for Hp dv9000, which has the same chipset) and then the driver from ibm.com and worked from the first try
and a note - after patch install did a reboot, then installed the ibm driver, reboot and after that test the sound (procedure i've read on a romanian forum - same place where i'va found out that the hp patch works on lenovo too)
