T60w lockups

Hi Forum,

I am having problems with my new T60w. It has reguarly been locking up since the beginning, ie. the screen simply freezes, mouse or keyboard does not react. The keyboard light is still working though. Only solution is to reboot holding down the on/off button.

It happens rather often - fx. allways when using Google Earth and sometimes when starting up a video clip in Media Player. I've tried to upgrade bios and check that drivers are of the latest version.

Lately I have tried to turn Hardware accelration down to zero and I have not seen the problem since...

Any suggestions anyone?

Could be anything, software culprit, improper drivers, bad memory, system overheat are just few to name.

I suggest you monitor the activity of the processes in the task manager and see which program is causing it. I highly suspect it's some software that you installed.

Also:

Test the memory via this free program at http://www.memtest86.com/

Monitor your system temperature via http://www.pbus-167.com/

Alternatively, you can boot via any live CD of Linux distro to single out the chances of anything to do with the hardware.

Factory restore could be an option if nothing helps.

Would Notebook Hardware Control (from your link above) be a good replacement for Power Manager?

How can I see which program is causing the problem by monitoring the task manager? (remember that when the system locks I can't access the computer but have to restart).

I tried the system temperature monitoring program and set the logging function on. Then forced the lock-up (by using google earth) - but in the logfiles nothing seemed suspicious.

I also have tried to run the pre-installed PC Doctor program to test the system and on some tests the computer did lock up. I dont know where in which process it happened. Anyone know if there is a logfile written when running a PC Doctor system test?

Or anyone knows of another program that can log system activity. This way I might be able to find out excaktly what happened prior to the lock-up...

I have now run the memtest86 program and it found one error and gave the following line:

Tst:8

Is this something I should worry about and can it explain the problem with lockups?

Honestly, I don't use it for power management purposes and am more than happy with Thinkvantage Power Manager so I don't know.

Are you using 2x512MB=1GB combination? Nevertheless, I believe you have a bad memory module.

Also, you can see in Event Viewer (Right click My computer>Manage>System Tools>Event Viewer) what the computer reports about any possible error on system lockups.

Thanks - where can I check the memory combination?

Already checked the system logs but nothing seems to show up- only one error concerning non existing IISADMIN.

Might just send the computer back... just annoying as I need it for a project I am working on...

Here (Right Click and then Save Target As). Unzip it then open cpuz and go to SPD check Slot 1 and 2 if none of them is empty then you have 2x512MB otherwise 1x1GB stick.

Another method to check is to open up your notebook (palmrest) and see how many sticks are installed. I prefer the first one though.

Try going back to factory state (backup all your data) before sending it back. Maybe that will help.
