Using USB drive as system disk

I have recently purchased a T60 and IBM (lenovo) exgternalusb hard drive (with SATA). I was told by my supplier that I would be able to install WINDOWS XP or VISTA on this usb device and boot from it. My aim is to have vista on the internal drive and XP on the USB.

I have spent soem time trying to install the system on the drive but as yet with little success - the install runs to the end but when doing the final re-boot it crashes with a STOP error (ox0000007b......).

If anyone has any experience or advice I would be extremely grateful.

i don't think you can run Windows from a USB drive. Weird how it installed unless you forced it to by removing the external one from the drive then putting it inside the computer, installing then put it back in the cage. If that's what you did you should have realized that it was blocked for a reason.

If you didn't do that and all you did was plug in the drive into the USB port and then selected it from the install screen and it installed then hmm... weird.

How did you get it on there?

I simply did the install using the drive simply connected through the USB interface and my supplier (and a bit of investigation on the web suggests that it is possible to do.

I have tried various approaches including installing the intel chipset drivers and sata support as part of the install but with no success.

If I cannot get any other hints on how to do it my next attempt will be to put the drive into the internal slot, build XP there and then transfer it back to the USB and see what happens.
