Audio "machine noise" on T61

I noticed that on many portable computers (fx. on the 3000 n100) theres "machine noise" when you plug in earphones - even when the sound is 100 pct. turned off and all you ought to hear is silence.

For comparison my old stationary with a cheap shamrock mb has no noise what so ever from its audio out - and so is perfect.

What is the situation on the T61 (the machine I am planning to buy) ? Is it 100 pct silent when audio is turned off ? (or any other thinkpad for that matter as that would probably give a good indication)

FWIMBW, my T42p is silent with headphones with volume turned up and nothing else going on.

Have a t40p here, and got pretty decent sound output from the headphone jack (no noise).

Nothing compared to my other d610 (noise).

On my t42p, I do notice a little bit of noise when the earbuds are plugged in, and an occasional "blip" too that's never bugged me enough to do anything about it.

I think that's the nature of non-hi-fi consumer electronics. Sometimes you get interference, sometimes not.
