Access conections and slow boot time.
Access conections and slow boot time.
I have a new T61 with VISTA Home Premium and the Intel 4965AGN card. I am experiencing unusually long boot times—approximately 3 minutes. The culprit seems to be Access Connections (AC), the icon for which does not appear in the system tray for about 90 seconds after everything else is loaded—and then the CPU runs at 100% on both cores for another 15 or 20 seconds after it does load.
Disabling AC through “services” does not make things better. I understand this is because AC is tightly integrated with the Intel wireless drivers for Lenovo. That leaves uninstalling AC, but I’m reluctant to do that because of fear of affecting other ThinkVantage applets that operate through AC.
Is there another solution, such as disabling the Windows WLAN Autoconfig, which also starts automatically? Or is it ok to just go ahead and uninstall AC since I’m happy configuring through the windows applet. There's a fair amount of conflicting information on the forum, so I'd appreciate a fresh view. Thanks. Lponz7

This sounds suspiciously like the "120-second Network delay" bug that's plagued every version of Windows since at least preSP1 XP. In some versions of windows, you want to disable Wireless Zero Config (probably the Vista equivalent is wireless auto config), in other versions you must NOT disable it, and instead disable AC.
It can also be really tough to initially diagnose, since you will often NOT have the delay if you are connected to a network and restart the computer while still in network range. This happens because the computer is able to pick up its last-connected wifi signal without delaying. But if you move the system to an area with a different/no wifi APs, it will again take an extra 120 seconds during boot as it seeks out a network.
Good luck...

exlax, did you simply uninstall access connections (which I've read elsewhere doesn't play nice with Vista)? If so, did that require reinstalling the wireless drivers, or have any other undesirable consequence? Thanks.
BTW, I don't thin it's the network delay issue, as this occurs even when I re-boot connecting to the same network. lponz7

quite annoying.. any idea how to overcome this ?
