512MB ATI x1400 on T60 | Why possible on my T60 2007?

#1 Post by lautamas » Mon Jul 09, 2007 11:26 am

Hello people,
I just bought a T60 that comes with 512mb ATI X1400. I wonder how this can be. When I checked the ATI Control Panel, it really shows me 512mb.

I have browsed around in the internet. I have also seen the T60 Hardware Maintanance Manual..there is no such thing as 512mb ATI x1400. So, anybody can explain why? I am attaching picture bellow of the screenshot showing the memory. My model is 2007-G4G (T60) with SXGA+ (1400x1050)

Thank You,

Michael

I believe it borrows system memory (hypermemory or turbomemory, I forget what ATI calls it).

The X1400 comes with 128 vram. and borrows the rest from main memory as it needs.
ATI calls this hypermemory.

Depending on the driver version. the total memory indicated will be 512 or 256mb.

HyperMemory for ATI and TurboCache for NV

I think this depends on the amount of installed memory.
It will never borrow up to 384mb main memory if you have only 512mb installed.

The first thing I did when I got my Z61m was to upgrade the memory to 1.5gigs(512megs standard)

I noticed a change in the total Vram from 256 to 512 after a driver upgrade (my machine was made in Aug. 2006, and bought on Feb. 2007)

I have searched the forums and you are also correct. If total system memory is 512, only 128megs are allocated for hypermemory, even with latest drivers.

So both driver version and the amount of ram will affect the hypermemory amount...

As of now, it cannot be adjusted by the user. You can find a lot of info on this if you search this forum.
