access points and my T61 w/Vista

Perhaps this is a Vista issue or something altogether different but has anyone had any trouble connecting to an access point?

There is an AP at school with 90-100% signal strength using WPA2/AES. A lot of people with Vista are having problems connecting to it. The weird thing for me is that I can connect to the AP but not all web sites will work. I can connect to Gmail and a few other various sites but about 75% of the sites I try and access just time out. But the person sitting right beside me with XP can connect to the very same site.

Anyone ever heard of this? Is there something in Vista I'm missing? I do have it set to a private network although file sharing is turned off (but discovery is on).

I recently read (in PC Magazine I think) that suggested you define your wireless system as public, in order to get around some connection issue in Vista. Here's another source which says the same thing:

Windows Vista Magazine - 5 simple steps to setting up a home network

And yes, I have had problems with Vista in connecting to my home's 802.11b network but at work on a 802.11g system, it's fine.

Hey, thanks, I'll try to set it as public and see what it does. But I have the opposite problem in that I can connect to my home network (802.11g and WPA) but not the one at school running WPA2. And the part that really confuses me is the fact that I can connect to some sites but not others while XP users can connect to those very same sites! Go Vista!

And then again... it could be this:

Microsoft : Problem connecting to public wireless networks with Vista Home

In short, there seems to be some wireless APs that do not play well with Vista.
