Memory Upgrade for T61p

I am considering a T61p but am dumbfounded by the premium they charge for RAM. (4 gb = 845 dollars) Even the more reasonable 2 gb option is more expensive than it should be. I am considering just getting the base and purchasing the RAM seperate on Newegg (unless you guys know of a better site for RAM) Do any of you have any experience with this or any advice it would be GREATLY appreciated as I do not want to fiddle with a 2k system without knowing what I am doing
Thank you,
Liam

OK so I found good compatible memory (when it comes back in stock)

My only questions now are - how hard is it to swap the memory, and will 4gb ONLY run on vista buisness x64? (not windows vista ultimate?)
Thanks again,
Liam

I would suggest
www.crucial.com -- they have always been really good for memory, and if anything goes wrong, it's easy to return/replace. I can't say enough good things about them.
Memory is extremely easy to replace. Takes less than 1 minute, with a screwdriver.
4GB will RUN with any operating system. You just won't be able to use it all in a 32-bit operating system. Vista x64 (or even Windows XP x64) can use all 4GB. With Windows XP or Windows Vista (the 32-bit versions) you'll only see around 3GB available for use by the operating system. It won't hurt to have 4GB, but it's kind of a waste.

thanks ken - do you know if there is a windows vista ultimate that is x64 an is there any downside to using said OS? I actually looked into crucial first but was turned off because the latest thinkpad they have to configure memory with is the T43p (which is pc2-4200, not compatible with T61p's PC2-5300)

The Crucial website has memory for the T6x series. Look under
Lenovo, not IBM.

As carbon_unit said, you have look under Lenovo.
I'm using Vista x64 on my X61 tablet, and am very happy with it (took a while to get all the drivers set up correctly, but now it's great). Having 4GB of memory is crucial for my work.
But I do have a question for everyone:
Crucial offers both PC-5300 and PC-6400 memory. Is there any benefit to paying the extra $$$ for the PC-6400 memory? -- Ken

thanks I was looking for lenovo but I must has skipped past them... this site says the memory is compatible but its PS2-6400 instead of the 5300 offered when you customize the laptop - is this still compatible, just of a higher grade as said above? I can get 4 gb of corsair memory for about 300 at 5300

PC6400 is still compatible -- your T61 just won't get any benefit from the extra memory speed.
