I believe it's the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver(sata): http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... migr-62909

Hey Steve...
I downloaded the driver..... but its still not picking it up....
I did however change the BIOS setting to "Compatibility" in the SATA HD section when I was about to install XP on it....
It was not recognizing the drive otherwise...
now when I change it back to AHCI... it is giving me the blue screen of death... any ideas?

Maybe System Update would catch it?

that's probably the Intel memory card thingy in the express slot which doesn't work with XP.

First of all, did you follow the installation instuctions on the link above? If you did, then try the following: go to Device Manager and right-click on the problem device(s), then choose to uninstall. Now reboot. See what shows up in Device Manager now.

hehe, cute... i already mentioned that above but he didn't happen to say anything else about it other than he thinks that might be it. Guess he's trying other things tho but there are no XP drivers for turbo memory so after he tries out another 10 drivers then i guess he'll conclude it's the turbo memory thingy.

I could be wrong tho because he didn't mention if he has turbo memory option or not.

Are you *sure* it's not the SATA ? Did you follow the bit closely were it says "Run Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver. To do this, go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE, and double-click install.cmd. " ??

Then you shutdown, go into BIOS, and enable AHCI ?

Hi guys....
just an update...

Status: Still not picking up the device.... Still showing Unknown device..

Solutions tried....
1. Ran windows update.... No luck with it....
2. Ran system update.... No luck with it....
3. Downloaded the SATA drivers.... followed the instructions.... ran install.cmd.... did the reboot.... no luck....

What do I think?
Not that I am anything close to you guys in terms of Thinkpad knowledge.... But I think its that darn turbo memory thingy....
just like some of you guys have pointed out....
The machine came with Vista business installed on it and it did have the turbo memory on the chip.... I think that is what it is...
BUT then again.... what do I know ? hehe

xp is just not going to recognize the turbo memory card plain and simple.

you might as well open it up and take that card out if you are going to stick with XP.

I wrote the below first, but it occurs to me that perhaps you do not need the driver for the Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2811, but rather you need the driver for a device attached to it. Just a thought. In Device Manager, under System devices, do you see the Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2811 without any errors? If so, then the problem is probably with a device attached to it.

I think you guys are all barking up the wrong tree. My T42 has an Intel LPC Interface Controller in Device Manager. I certainly don't have Turbo Memory or SATA controllers on my T42. I am still convinced it is one of the devices controlled by the Intel Chipset drivers.
Regarding the Southbridge Chip, Wikipedia wrote:ISA bus or LPC Bridge. Though the ISA support is rarely utilized, it has interestingly managed to remain an integrated part of the modern southbridge. The LPC Bridge provides a data and control path to the SIO (the normal attachment for the keyboard, mouse, parallel port, serial port, IR port, and floppy controller) and BIOS ROM (flash).
Click on Southbridge (computing) in the following link. The url will not post properly here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southbridge

I post the link below for information, but I would use the chipset drivers downloaded from Lenovo's site just to be safe.
Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2811 driver

It's the Atmel TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip :
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58054

That's the only part using the LPC interface controller. On my T60p, it was the same kind device : Atmel TPM on Intel(R) 82801GBM (ICH7-M/U) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9

You typically will have up to 3 unknowns on a 61 series install.

The TPM.
The Turbo Memory card.
Intel AMT Firmware/driver( If activated in the bios )

For the TPM, install the XP driver for it. I know those can be hard to find on Lenovo's site for XP as of late. You might want to check the driver matrix for an X61 and R61 as they are the same driver and it seems Lenovo has them showing up for some machines and not others.

For the Turbo Memory, you are out of luck. There will be no drivers for XP, as there is no Chipset support from Intel, and no OS support from Microsoft. There is supposely a util that lets you get rid of the device bang in XP - probably a "Null" driver.

For the Intel AMT.... Don't even enable it. Unless you are in a large IT shop, you probably aren't going to use it for a darn thing, much less understand it.
