On a brand new Vista Business T61, I'm getting an error on startup 'RunDLL Error loading C:\Progra....\...\PWMTR32V.DLL. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail"

Event log has this ... "Activation context failed for PwmIdTsv.exe" Dependent assembly ..... could not be found ...".

This error was not happening initially, however, I joined to computer to the domain, and uninstalled all the Office Trial 2007 software, sql server stuff, etc.

The following works in XP for SideBySide errors. I don't know what to do with Vista.

Here is a link I pulled up with Google. It appears that PWMTR32V.DLL is part of the Power Management driver for the battery gauge, etc.

I had given up on this issue (lived without Power Management), but the other day, I had to install the SonicWall VPN client on the laptop, and ran into the same problem - sidebyside error. I did more research, and also waded through the Japanese link provided in the previous post. Eventually, I solved the problem by installing the Visual C runtime SP1. I first tried some older Visual C runtime, but it did not help. Here is the link to the SP1 version:

Also - and I'm not sure if this was relevant or not, but - I did the install while logged on as an admin, rather than installing using the 'run-as...' feature of Vista. Obviously, run as... is supposed to do the same thing, but I wondered if there were some secondary actions that were being initiated after the install that would also require admin privileges, so I decided to play it safe and simply log on as an admin (we run as non-admins by default).

After doing the install as an admin, I logged off and then back on as a non-admin; the computer got stuck in the 'welcome' phase of the log on process, and I had to hard-reset it. After that, I was able to log on fine. This could have been a coincidence.

In terms of searching for solutions to this, I learned that 'sidebyside' is also referred to as 'sxs', 'side by side', 'side-by-side', etc. It's a pain to search for because everybody who posts 'side by side comparisons' of products shows up!

Wow - I've been putting up with this error for the last few weeks after doing a fresh install of Vista Ultimate on my T61. Installed the Visual Studio redistributables and finally got rid of this error.
