That was true before Santa Rosa, but the new chipset has the ability to adress 4 GB RAM and the IO-devices without overlap. (It has a larger address space then 32 bit, but 4 GB is the max limit.) This will obviously require support from the OS, which means a 64 bit operating system.

guys, please answer my question: does t61p have an off centered LCD or not, I need to know that, if it is off centered I am canceling my order.

It should be easy to tell if it is from the pictures GarryF has provided in this very thread. If you didn't notice it in the pictures, I doubt it'll bother you.

Bigger surprise, all T61/p, no matter which size they come in (14.1'' WS, 14.1'', 15.4'') have off centered screen.

Quite true, it doesn't bother me, looking closely it's maybe 5-10mm offset. There's also little logos there indication the wireless I think. Personally I'd far rather take superior reception than a screen in the middle.

Your desire to run PAE (which is a hack from a technology perspective, and requires application support) on a 32-bit OS, when 64-bit versions are readily available, boggles my mind ...

sure it's a hack but if i shared your mindset then i'd limit myself even further.   my only options would be to use a 32-bit OS with only 3gb of ram, use a 64-bit OS with zero driver support for two photo printers, one scanner, one digital SLR, and two cell phones -- none of which are supported in vista yet, or switch to using a 17" UXGA macbook pro (which isn't out of the question at this point).

My business partner decided to upgrade his T42P after seeing my new T61P and it arrived yesterday, I took it home to reinstall windows etc and took the chance for a few comparison pics

Both screens appear to be similar out of the box, same blue bright colour and both have light leakage along the bottom on a black screen.

Calibration really helps make the colours more natural and tones down the brightness a bit.

Hi Garry,

Can you please describe the degree of uneveness in LCD brightness (i.e. light leakage) you observe with T61p?

I am trying to decide between T61p and Dell D830 for photographic use, but the latter is reported to have fairly significant light leakage, especially along the bottom 1" or so of the screen at the highest resolution. I am wondering how T61p would compare to it.

It would be most helpful if you could comment or perhaps drop a shot of the screen in monochromatic mode (such as all-blue, or with blank screen saver).

There are some reference images for D830 here (see under the "Display" section).

This shows the light leakage along the bottom, it's a tricky shot to take trying to get the exposure to show what I'm actually seeing, I think this was pretty close.


I just tried a black desktop and during normal use with the taskbar along the bottom couldn't see any sign of light leakage, only time I could think this might be visible would be watching a widescreen movie with black bars top & bottom (but I don't watch movies on mine)

Can you please clarify few questions about T61p?

I tried to get them clarified through Lenovo tech support but that's hopeless... spent an hour on hold just to figure out that they know nothing.

Does T61p come with FireWire port?

What are the exact dimensions of the laptop?
(I got a laptop bag that is perfect for travel and goes right to the tolerance limits of certain airlines I fly without crossing them over, so I'd like to make sure that T61p does fit in before ordering it.)

If I use 9-cell battery, will it protrude a bit from the back of the laptop making it effectively larger? Or will it be still exactly the same size as 6-cell?
If 9-cell battery makes T61p larger, by how much?

Does T61p have a serial port?
(Not really too important for me, but I have GPS with serial interface, and so was curiois if I can hook it in directly or would have to hawl separate serial/USB adapter.)

Is the screen matte or glossy?

I don't own a T61p... yet (delayed, argh!), but some of the questions I can answer with moderate certainty. It [edit]does[/edit] have a firewire port, the 9-cell is larger and protrudes out the back a bit, it does not have a serial port, and the screen is matte, just like all the other Thinkpads.

The pictures on the first page of this thread show there's a firewire port on the front left.

I have 6 cell, photos show it flush, 9 cell will stick out a bit, not sure how much, 1"+

Lenovo Australia is offering IBM T61 15'' with free upgrade to 4G ram. I think that the T61 WSXGA 15'' can see total 4G instead of 3.2 as we are discussing.

I've not used the standard VGA, for movies I expect VGA be ok fbut for me I wanted best quality which is DVI.

With a dock it's possible to work with external screen, you drop it in and press the power button on the dock. You can also set it up to work with lid closed and no dock but need to disable actions on close lid.

Oh, and I decided shortly after ordering the laptop that I needed 4G, so I got another stick of 2G from kingston.

Funny thing is the Kingston RAM is already here, but my est ship date is 8/30/07

I have high hopes for the 1G turbo memory for the slow crappy SATA HD (I am used to SAS 15k HD). This is the weakest link of any laptop right now.

Don't get your hopes up, from what I've read improvements are marginal at best

Garry - I too have received my t61p recently but running 3dmark05 my score is just 3784.
I have installed the latest drivers etc dated 25/6/07 version 7.15.11.145.
Is there something I am doing wrong?

As a relative newb any other tips on what to do out of the box? My hard drive is depressingly full already with only 33.7GB avail of the 86.7GB I can access?
Anything I can do about that in terms of:
a. accessing what it is that is clogging up my hard drive so much
and b. deleting uneccessary MS or Lenovo bloatware?

All fixed. Embarrassingly was a power plan issue. Now resolved and scoring 7655 which is more like it!

Hey GaryF, I was just wondering if you had UWB in your laptop. It seems that all the US orders that are experiencing delays had UWB in their configuration.

I'm pretty sure that feature comes standard. There was no way to unselect it when I was configuring it.

UWB seems to be standard for most (all?) models in the US - but not in Europe! In fact, there seem to be NO models with UWB in Europe which is caused by regulatory problems with UWB...

if you have UWB then there will be a UWB icon in place of the bluetooth icon on the display's inner clear plate.   the Fn+F5 control would also show UWB as an option.
