At least for me it is. (This is in Vista)There have been a few threads on this subject with different theories as to solutions. I never heard this one though... Anyway in my case I went to control panel/sound/highlighted speakers/ properties/ level tab. My T60P was set at 33% even though all normal settings were set at full. Made a world of difference....

In XP, this seems to be linked directly to the Master Volume slider in the volume control mixer. When I slide one, the other automatically changes (as long as you have left and right channels linked). Has it changed in Vista?

checked on mine in vista, but mine was already set to max, so even turned up its still weak. There was also a volume adjustment for the cd player but it made no difference

Should also mention that you need to uninstall the SoundMax drivers and let Windows handle the audio, then adjust the settings I suggested earlier.

I have disabled the soundmax driver, so how do I get windows to handle the sound?
When you disable the soundmax drivers it disables the silver volume buttons and the OSD.

Uninstall SoundMax from Add/Remove then reboot. Windows will install the appropriate driver. I did not even reboot, but it might be a good idea. You can always run ThinkVantage update and reinstall SoundMax anytime you wish..

wow...so you're saying by uninstalling the SoundMax drivers you were able to max out your sound, effectively, by 67%?? can anyone verify this?
ps. thanks for the tip about the speaker setting in control panel; even with the SoundMax driver installed, my (default) setting was at 84%, so I guess I can get another 16% maxed out

I've been running sans soundmax drivers since day 1.
I pulled up this thread cause this was the first day I used my speakers since trying this trick, and a movie trailer I just played almost knocked me out of my chair.
Now I'm sitting here swearing my speakers are way louder than they were before. But I really can't tell if it's so or if it's the placebo effect.
Oh well. Seems better, so I'm not complaining.
Btw, it's still directly linked to my master volume, which is always maxed (I use the thinkpad volume keys exclusively)...

I have managed to uninstall the Soundmax driver and then rebooted.
But nothing happens, how do you get windows to install window drivers?

What do you mean, nothing happens? Did you go to control panel/sound and adjust the setting there?
