T61p memory upgrade

#1 Post by jimlenz » Sun Jul 22, 2007 11:51 am

I plan to upgrade the memory on my t61p when I receive it. The order shows pc2-5300 1gb as the memory. I went out and bought memory and I have a feeling I got the wrong one. The one I got is pc2-5400. Both are 667 mhz.

Will I need to exchange for the current memory or can I use the two in combination? I have 1gb and am adding a 2gb module.

Thanks.

Jim

They really are the same thing 666.667 x 8 = 5333, and some manufacturers decided to round up to 5400 ...

I think you should take 800MHz DDR2 memory for T61p(fit for the FSB speed).

the memory speed is capped at 667mhz regardless. there would be no benefit in purchasing expensive 800mhz ram.

Correct. The Santa Rosa chipset may have a 800 MHz FSB, but it only supports memory access at 667 MHz.

Ram Latency

#7 Post by jimlenz » Sun Jul 22, 2007 9:34 pm

Thanks to all for answering my question.

I do have one more. I didn't know much about Ram and went out and bought an OCZ 2gb stick. I read that the latency is 5-5-5. I see that this is not great.

Will this be a problem on my t61p? Will I notice it? I am pairing this 2gb stick with the 1gb stick inside the t61p? Or should I go out and buy better latency 667 ram?

Thanks for all your help.

I have a stick with that latency from OCZ. It is standard for laptop memory, and almost everybody should have no problem with that latency.
