T61: Display Driver igfx instability in Vista 64-bit

#1 Post by hypertrophy » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:56 pm

Has anyone else with a T61 with integrated graphics using Vista 64-bit notice stability issues with the display driver igfx v.7.14.10.1244?

Every couple of seconds, my screen will blink, change it's setting to full brightness, and a windows dialog box will pop up stating "Display driver igfx stopped working and has successfully recovered."

The driver is also related to the brightness OSD problem on both x86 and x64 platforms.

So i found a new igfx driver, v7.14.10.1283, directly from the Intel site for Vista 64-bit.

Here's the driver info:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/13555/E ... 64_gfx.htm

Here's the download link:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... n&lang=eng

Can anyone tell me how i would go about installing the new driver from a .zip file? They do not have a .exe file available for download at this time.

I have an X61 that uses the same driver, and the Lenovo driver continued to cause the igfx problems. I downloaded the latest from the Intel site, and installed it on Vista x64. Perfectly stable since doing so.

To install it, you cannot run the executable that's inside the download. You must install it manually, first uninstalling whatever driver is on your computer, rebooting to standard VGA mode, and then updating the driver from control panel. Point to the location where you extracted the drivers, and it ought to work. (You MAY be able to simply run their installation program, but I couldn't -- it told me that I was using an unsupported computer. I'm certainly not, and it works marvelously.) -- Ken

That's just the post i was hoping for. Thanks Ken. I'll give it a try.

Edit: Ken, can you tell me the exact folder you extracted the new drivers from?

The driver is located in the "Graphics" folder. The actual driver install application is called "igdlh64" for Vista 64-bit.

I had a hell of a time trying to install the driver. I first ran the setup.exe file and it worked; but during the install, my display turned off and i could not get it to turn back on. I had to shutdown manually by holding down the power button. After restarting, I deleted the driver and tried another install, this time manually as per the installation_readme file located within the main folder.

I started the install once more and the screen turned off again. This time even the power button would not shut down the computer. I pressed the enter key a couple of times and was finally able to shutdown the notebook manually by holding down the power button again.

This time i did something pretty dumb when windows restarted. I located the driver version for the display adapter under device manager and pressed update driver. Well, dont do that! It reverts the driver back down to the older unstable driver. So i had to manually install the driver this time. I didnt allow Windows to automatically install a display driver. I then ran the manual install again and it worked fine this time. The display did not turn off and i was able to restart the computer normally. Everything is looking good so far.
