I used my Acronis True Image 10 Home Build 4942 to restore only the MBR and everything is back on track
Just upgraded to 7k200 HDD for T60 successfully!
Sunday night I installed my new 200Gb drive in my new Ultra-bay adapter, downloaded and installed the trial version of Acronis Home 10 and told it to do it's thing. I left it on automatic and did not change any settings. I went to bed. Monday AM it asked for me to shut it down, so I did. Then I put the new drive inside the computer and the old drive in a bag. Then I turned it on. Presto! Everything worked just as it had before except now I have a lot of drive space free. The noise level seems lower also!!
Many thanks to you all !!!

Dual Boot Install problem
I am trying to set up my T61p as a dual boot with Vista Ultimate in main drive (C:), and Win XP in the Ultrabay Adapter with 7K200 (D:). I have tried several ways to get Win XP/Win 2000/Win 98 on D:, but cannot. The WinXP install option is not available from the CD, perhaps because it sees Vista on C:, and wont allow it.
I pulled the main drive, swapped with the 7K200 (now in main drive), and tried to install. WinXP says there is no drive available. Win98 installed the files, but then gave an out of memory error half way thru (3GB RAM).
Any suggestions on how i can get XP (or any OS) installed on 7K200? Any ideas why XP install disk cannot see the disk?

Try changing the SATA setting in the BIOS to "Compatibility Mode".gfinney wrote: Any ideas why XP install disk cannot see the disk?
Good luck!
With a unformatted 7K200 in your T61p may I suggest that you install any older OS that you wish to install to a small percentage of your 7K200 and set it up. This will result in your 7K200 being mounted as the C drive for that OS. When you are ready to install Vista install it to the remaining part of the drive. Vista will then install Vista boot manager which will switch the active OS to drive C, and the inactive OS to drive D. So if you boot into XP it will be drive C, and if you boot into win98 it will be drive C or if you boot into Vista it will become drive C
From my observations I would also suggest that you go into the BIOS and set the hard drive to "Compatibility Mode" and leave it there, if you install the"SATA" drivers you will gain nothing in performance, and you may run into Compatibility problems if you attempt to add any ATA hardware to your system in the future. Nor will your computer be able to switch back to "compatibility mode" and boot into an OS that has the current "SATA" drivers installed. As far as I can tell once the current SATA drivers are installed you can not un-install them, without reinstalling the OS.

Trueimage is software by acronis, www.acronis.com
It's a software to duplicate or clone from one harddrive to another.
I put my 7k200 externally SATA enclosure(Vantec 3.0 Brand Amazing stuff) using USB 2.0. So basically my original HD still stays in the original bay.
So I booted under Vista and then I plugged in the External HDD which I wanted the information to be cloned into. and I went to start and then run type in CMD. A command prompt would appear. This was when I typed in BCDEDIT...
After all this, you run your trueimage software and that's it. the clone command there. and the Vista will restart and it will go into cloning mode.
I hope this information helps.
Hi, all,
My T61p is about to be delivered. I already have a 7k200 and Acronis 10, and I promise I've read all the posts, but I still don't know what to do. I think some of the posters are assuming some knowledge that I lack. Considering how complicated this can be, can someone post a *very* plain and simple step-by-step?
For example, it's not clear to me whether first I turn on the computer and allow the computer to set up and Vista to install completely before plugging in the 7k200.
And do I then have the 7k200 in the external enclosure to make an image with Acronis?
And where are the drives when I go get a command prompt? And do I boot into Vista before getting the command prompt, or did I boot with the Acronis CD?
And are these lines:
BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice boot
typed in *exactly*, and where are which drives when it happens?
I'd greatly appreciate it if someone would make a complete step-by-step, assuming the user (me, or others) knows nothing at all and needs to have his hand held.
Thanks lots,
--Steve D.

1) Boot your new PC, let Vista complete its configuration, then personalize it to your likings, install any software you need, transfer your files, and the like.StevenD wrote:I'd greatly appreciate it if someone would make a complete step-by-step, assuming the user (me, or others) knows nothing at all and needs to have his hand held.

2) Open a command prompt (as administrator) and type the commands:
Code: Select all
BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice boot3) Shut down the PC
4) Remove the disk in the main bay
5) Put the 7k200 disk in the main bay, and the old disk in an external USB enclosure
6) Boot with the Acronis CD
7) Select "Clone disk", cloning the external (old) disk to the internal (new) one
8) When cloning is finished, shut down the PC
9) Detach the USB enclosure
10) Reboot, and you're done!

What is wrong because when I type this:
into cmd it says:
Code: Select all
BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice bootI'm the only user of the laptop and I sure have administrator rights. The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
Acces is denied.
Re: Just upgraded to 7k200 HDD for T60 successfully!
you might be an administrator but you don't automatically have full administration rights in vista. right-click on a shortcut to command prompt and select 'run as administrator'. this should solve your problem.SetTainte wrote:What is wrong because when I type this:into cmd it says:Code: Select all
