t60 2gb memory issue

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Tue Jul 24, 2007 3:18 pm

there used to be memory issue with 2gb (2x1gb) memory not being recognized by Thinkpad T60 (pre-Santa Rosa).
1. has this issue been resolved?
2. what is the maximum RAM I can have on my T60?
currenlty I am running Vista but I'm planning to roll back to XP.

I have a T60p with 2GB and have no problems. A year ago there was a problem with hibernation on 2GB machines that required a hotfix from Microsoft, but that has been resolved.
Current: T60p (2007-93G). Previous: T23 (2647-9LG).

All T-series Thinkpads since the T30 have support for 2X1GB memory.

The problem some people reported was relating to the fact that some Lenovo/IBM memory sticks in T60s were defective, and would not work correctly with any secondary stick, regardless of the brand. I had this problem, and Lenovo sent me a replacement stick.

Can't T60 with Vista be max to 4 GB? http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... GR-55644#t

Whether or not the system detects 4 GB is the question I'm looking for an answer. Because I seemed to remember somewhere on the web that someone claimed that Windows only detects 3 GB although you have 4 GB installed.

Anyone?

Any 60-series ThinkPad (T60, X60, R60, Z60/Z61) will accept 4 GB of memory but only 3 GB will be accessible to the operating system (regardless of whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit OS).

The new 61-series ThinkPads can access the full 4 GB of memory when used with a 64-bit operating system.

Thanks for the info, tomh009. I was going to buy another 2 GB stick, but I'll only buy 1 GB since only 3 GB can be used.

If you install 4GB, you can only use 3 on the T60, but memory-intensive tasks will run about 9% faster than having 3GB installed because of memory interleave. Worthwhile? Not for me right now.

Thanks, Whizkid.

Do you (or if anyone) know that if I can mix using PC2-4200 with PC2-5300 modules? Currently, I have PC2-4200 installed, and when I checked at Crucial, both 4200 and 5300 are at the same price. I haven't really looked up on Lenovo website for compatibility yet. Performance-wise, is there any significant difference between 4200 and 5300?

Thanks in advance. :)

EDIT: If I installed mix modules, will I get dual channel mode? Sorry if this is a stupid question to ask. :?

IIRC, when mixing modules, the higher one will clock down. However, if the T60 takes PC2-5300, then I don't know if it can even take it. If it can, both will run at 533Mhz.

I don't think you can run dual channeled except with two of the exactly same sticks.

My safe bet is to go with 4200 to get dual channel. Thanks for the info.

The t60, with 4GB installed, will only recognize the first 3GB regardless of operating system. However, with 2x2GB modules, even though you'll only "see" 3GB the memory still operates in synchronous dual-channel mode so there is a slight speed benefit by installing 4GB.

With the T61, you'll see 4GB only if you run a 64-bit operating system.

I'm running a T60p with 4GB RAM and Vista-64, and I see 3GB.

I've just upgraded to 2 x 1 GB sticks of RAM (Mushkin). I'm not sure what's this issue that you've mentioned (I'm now browsing the forum for more info, if someone could point me to the issue that would save time and be really great!).

The problem I have though is that I can't see the SPD information of the RAM. I've tried using CPU-Z and also Sandra and Everest but can't get the info. I've also run memtest86 and have 2 passes with no errors, but using advanced control to display SPD info gives me a message 'SMBus controller not recognized'.

I've updated to the latest drivers and from looking at my device manager there are no problems there as well. Is this related to the issue above?

Edit: Oops, should have paid more attention to the previous posts mentioning that this issue was to do with coming out of hibernation.
