I am running my brand new T60P (200786u). The one thing I notice is the fan is running and never shuts off. Is this normal? How can I check the temperature of my unit? It seems to run cooler than my T41p machine, but again the fan never turns off.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advise?

Every couple of weeks a new buyer starts a new thread on fan speed and/or operating temperature. I suggest you refer to the many existing threads on those issues. I doubt if anybody now has anything much to add to what has already been said.

My own experience is that the fan runs constantly and none of the BIOS updates or new versions of Power Manager etc in the last year have made any difference. FWIW I concluded that constant fan speed is a feature of the T60/T60p and I gave up worrying about it long ago.

Yes, when the fan starts to run, it will never stop.
tpfancontrol allow to see temp and to control the fan.
Fan runs when FireGL reach about 61°C (or something like that).
Fan assembly is not good enough to cool down under ACPI fan stop value (or ACPI fan stop value is too high).
Contact between GPU and fan assembly is made by a thermal pad witch is very high and heat transfer is very poor.

Core (2) Duo can operate at 100°C (125°C thermal shutdown)
FireGL can also run at 100°C (117°C thermal shutdown)

I solve the fan issue using tpfancontrol and replacing the thermal pad by a thin copper plate and arctic silver 5. This fan assembly mod lowers the gpu temp for about 15°C. It idle now at 68°C without fan.

PS : With my modded fan assembly, the fan stop when GPU reach 55°C. So, it seems that when CPU or GPU reachs 61°C, the fan spins and it stops at 55°C. Perhpas other components temperature set the fan on with lower values.

Yeah, I'm one of them Why not make this question a sticky? After all, from what I've read it seems a pretty simple answer: no, the [censored] thing won't turn off unless you do some mods to the heat sinks, and maybe not then.

You could also include suggestions on how to deal with Lenovo support when you try to send the defective POS back - that's my next move.
