T60p Ultrabay Data Transfer rate

#1 Post by billsboy » Tue Jul 31, 2007 10:31 pm

Trying to compare the performance between using the SATA HD Ultrabay adapter (with a 7200RPM drive) and using a comparable external USB 2.0 drive. Does anyone know what the data transfer rate is using the Ultrabay vs. using USB 2.0? Which would provide better performane?

I dont have the numbers with me at the moment, but I did run the HD tune on a seagate 5400.3 SATA in the default HDD bay, the Ultrabay SATA Adaptor, and on a SATA to USB 2.0 adaptor, all on my T60. Again, I dont have the numbers with me at the moment, but I remember the HDD and Ultrabay being within about 10% of each other (I believe around 35MB/s), with the USB 2.0 being much slower. I will look for the files when I get back to my other computer!

I don't have the numbers you ask for off the top of my head. However, you should know that it's not even close: the USB-connected drive would be far inferior in access time and transfer rate to the same drive accessed through the Ultrabay.

Ultrabay drives in the main unit perform exactly the same as internal drives. When installed in the Advanced Dock, it's limited to 34 MB/sec

Hitachi SATA drive in Ultrabay

#5 Post by billsboy » Wed Aug 01, 2007 12:46 am

I assume there is no problems using the new Hitachi Travelstar 200gb SATA drives (7k200) in the SATA Ultrabay Adpater, anyone know otherwise?

With a 5400 RPM hard drive, I get transfer rates just shy of 20mb/sec
