Upgrade to Custom Restore?

I was wondering if there is a way to get the Custom Restore functionality to work with those Thinkpads shipped before 2006 October.

I updated RnR to version 4, which also updated the predesktop area (service partition). Now the predesktop help and the restore itself does tell me about custom restoring, but I still cannot get it to work.
Restoring to factory defaults simply does not ask about this.

Is there a workaround?
