Ordered a new T61; warranty transfer question

Hi. Longtime TP owner here, since the 380 and 760/770 days, and have had quite a few since then.

I just ordered a T61 as a gift for someone else unrelated to me. I understand the warranty follows the machine so in theory, I don't need to do anything special here if the recipient ever needs to get warranty service or signs up for an extension to the warranty, right? Right now, billing is in my name and shipping is in the recipient's name.

Only reasons why I wonder is because: a) our addresses/name/etc are different and b) many moons ago, I have vague recollections of sometimes needing to write a formal letter to IBM to kick off a change in ownership.

Insight (or reassurance :D ) would be welcome. Thanks!

The warranty follows the serial number, as long as the serial number is entitled to warranty, the warranty applies, (regardless of name and address).
I have seen cases where according to IBM the warranty had run out, but after producing a purchase invoice,(proving date of purchase showing the TP to be "in warranty"), a TP was repaired under warranty without further questions.

N.B. Laws may be different here in Europe.

The warranty belongs to the machine not the owner.

Ok, great. Thanks, all! Much appreciated. I know she'll really love her new T61 -- it's a big surprise for another two days. :D
