Hi,

I did a search regarding these, and the threads I saw mostly were in relation to the T60/P, so I started this thread for more specific answers. (Sorry if I missed a T61-specific thread answering these)

OK, I have a 6465-CTO and the T61 15.4" HMM lists the SATA 9.5mm Ultrabay slim drive adapter, but not the PATA one that people have used on the T60. From what I have seen so far, there should be no incompatibilities, but it's not in the T61 HMM, so I wonder.

I haven't seen the connector end of each, so I don't know if the interfaces are the same. Also, I notice that when shining a light within the Ultrabay, that I see three interface connections. One reminiscent of the battery interface on my old 760XD (I assume this is for the Ultrabay battery), a standard laptop ATA connector (for CD/DVD), and what looks very much like a SATA connector.

Now, from what I have read in regards to the T60, the SATA drive adapter interface has been described as converting the SATA drive to PATA to function. As I said, I see something that looks like a SATA interface in my T61 Ultrabay, so I'm uncertain if they are interchangeable. However, the FRU for the T61 SATA drive adapter in the HMM matches the T60 one (26R9246, OPT: 40Y8725). Again, I wonder.

As for the PATA one, I see the OPT is 41U3148 (Anyone have a FRU?). I assume it would use the native ATA connector that the Multiburner uses, but since the internal drive is SATA, and that suspicious connector is in the Ultrabay, does it? Is it even compatible?

Also, from what I read, each accepts a bare drive (Yay, no caddies!) without needing screws, but does each adapter allow the Ultrabay retention screw to be used to secure it like the Multiburner? I assume that since both are for the Ultrabay Slim, that they will fit the T61 snugly like the Multiburner, but if not, I'd like to know as well.

I guess that's all I need to know. Thanks in advance.

As far as i know, both SATA and PATA Ultrabay Slim 2nd Hard Drive Adapter used in T60 can be used in T61 as well.

I've read that they should be, considering the drive bay size etc, but have you used them on a T61 yourself? Has anyone else?

Just curious, on the T61, does the SATA drive adapter connect to that SATA-looking port, or is it actually converting to a PATA interface?

Also, is there a FRU corresponding to 41U3148 for the PATA adapter? (Might help in shopping to know it)

It is converting to PATA, and it is FRU #26R9246:

Thanks. I posted that FRU above, but was actually asking for the PATA adapter FRU. (I could only find the OPT on that)

So, what's that third SATA-like connector then?

The "third" connector to which you are referring is for the Ultrabay Slim battery that fits T6x series and the UltraBase for the X6x series.

Right. I did speculate about that earlier, but I was wondering about the one that appears to look like an SATA connector.

Again, there are three sets of connections in the 6465CTO Ultrabay that I see from left to right:

ATA----------"SATA"-----------Battery (tabs)

I appreciate the other information. When I last mentioned it, I should have said "second" connector. I just remain curious about it. (If it's SATA, then why would the SATA drive adapter downconvert to PATA to work? etc)

No worries. I just snapped a pic:

As you can see, it's the one in the middle that appears to look like an SATA connector. It doesn't show too well, but on the upper right side of the connector there's a tab going up, making it a little "L-shaped" like other SATA connectors. That's what clinched it for me.

Yet, if the SATA drive adapter still uses the standard ATA on the left, like the burner, then what's the point of it?

The connector in the middle of the bay, which you have marked as SATA, is for the serial/parallel adapter. See here:

Ahhhhhh. Yes, that makes sense!

It couldn't use the IDE interface, but would need a PCI bus connection. I swear that connector looks like SATA, though. I wonder if they are using the same connector since it exists already and provides the same number of channels.

Does this mean that I can use the Ultrabay HDD adapter from my T43 (ATA) in my T60?

The main drive in the T60 is SATA though, right?

once again, as far as i know they will work. The internal connector is IDE but the thing that connects the UltraBay to the laptop is a specific port that all UltraBay devices use, from Floppy, DVDRW, CD, DVD and yes HDs. The connector on the inside determines what can be used in the adaptor.
