[T60] Heat problem after switching from T2500 to T7400

I recently purchased a T7400 CPU from ebay and replace the original T2500 that comes with my T60 (2007-66U). The new chip works well except that when I trying to run some multi-threaded applications (compressing X624 movies), the temperature of my CPU goes up to 98C after 10 minutes of usage. The idle temperature is about 55C, which I think is OK. (PS: the temperature for my old T2500 is 50C idle and 85C load) I tried reset the HSF a few time and I used AS5, so I don't think the 40C+ increase of temperature was caused by bad contact between the CPU and the HSF, it seems to me that the HSF just isn't sufficient to cool down the CPU.

I had some overheat problem with my GPU before, but it was solved after I removed the plastic layer covering the thermal compound, which Lenovo forgot to remove. By "solved" I mean the temperature of GPU under load drop from 105C to 85C.

I am wondering if getting a new heatsink (FRU 41V9932 rev. B) will help since I heard that the Rev.B makes the machine run much cooler than 41V9932 rev. A.

Also since the T7400 has a larger die size, I am wondering if I should get a different model (FRU 41W6407), which was designed for 4MB cache Core 2 Duo processors. I am not 100% sure if it is compatible with my machine.

Any suggestions?[/url]

Hi

My T7200 (with X1400) is running at ~70°C with Load and at ~55°C with no Load with the 41V9932 HSF.
The Fan was mistakenly changed by a Service technician because its an CTO student model an he didn't noticed that there is a C2D instead of CD installed.
Bevore there was another Fan installed, but i don't know what FRU it has.
The differnce was that both headpipes where covering both Airvents
And the CPU Heatsink hat some thick Copper plates.
With this Heatsink the CPU was hat 45°C but the GPU was at 75°C instead of 65°C witch it has now.

So, don't know why your CPU gets so hot but perhaps you should try the C2D HSF.

Thanks for the information. So the temperature of your T7200 only increases 15C from idle to load with the 41V9932 HSF? Then there must be something wrong with mine which has a 40C temperature difference. I guess I will buy a new rev.B 41V9932 since I am also concerning the temperature of my GPU.
Now the question is how do I know if a 41V9932 HSF is rev.A (the old one) or rev.B (the new one with better performance). :?

I don't think is a problem regarding which fan you have.
Did you make sure the fan/fins are without dust. Remember than AS5 need a very thin amount on the CPU die.
My suggestion is to reapply AS5:

Drop a 1/2 rice on the CPU die and then insert the HSF, twist it a little and mount the screws. I'm unsure if anyone has succesfully modded the HSF in the GPU area so the heatpipe comes in contact only with metal (copper) material and to the GPU (adding copper sheets). This should help, specially also in the Northbridge (like the T61's)

Be sure to clean the heatsink/CPU die very good with high purity isopropyl alcohol. I recommend using ArtiClean 1&2.

Thanks for the suggestion, although I think the way you described to apply AS5 (drop and twist) is for CPUs that have a IHS. Since the T7400 has a exposed core, I was following this instruction:

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I guess I will try to reinstall the CPU and reapply AS5 again.

Did you have any luck after reapplying AS5? I've just upgraded my T2500 for T7600 and CPU is cool enough, when running for 30 minutes with full speed (two CPUBurns running) temperature was holding around 85 degrees. But I'm concerned about GPU temperature now.

Not really. The CPU was still hitting 90C+. At the end I just sold the T60 and got a T61p, which runs so much cooler (At least the temp monitoring software says so).

Anyone happen to know what fans (Thermal device) would work in my 2613ETU T60p with the FireGL 5200? Will the 41V9932 work with it?

Yes, it will work. There are two different FRUs: 41V9932 for Core Duo laptops and 41W6407 for Core2 Duo. But I've upgraded my CD for C2D yesterday and the old heatsink worked just fine, CPU is cooled properly. The problem is with GPU but it was there before.

FYI - I got a T60 (same as the OPs - 2007-66U) recently that was manufactured in Feb 2007 and checking the temps now i get the following:

CPU 44°C (0x78)
APS 33°C (0x79)
PCM 33°C (0x7a)
GPU 63°C (0x7b)
BAT 19°C (0x7c)
BAT 19°C (0x7e)
BUS 34°C (0xc0)
PCI 42°C (0xc1)
PWR 41°C (0xc2)

That's normal load with AC Adapter plugged in running Vista Business SP1 RC on Balanced profile. I will unplup it soon and test.I didn't do any mods or anything just yet. I would like to get that GPU temp down a bit tho,

Side note - I love that Vista has it built in now, no need for Catalyst stuff unless it's the Windows Update drivers it downloaded recently included that. When the system goes in battery mode the LCD brightness drops automatically and the ATI GPU drops speeds also (how much i dunno)
