Why would you want to accept being limited to just one gig ram (or actually two since you could purchase one 2 GB stick) when you paid for a computer that is supposed to be able to run with up to 4 with gigs of ram?
I would think you would want to have Lenovo to repair it under warranty. The only question is whether to send it in now or wait a while until they have nailed down the problem and the solution more precisely.

I just wonder if the problem Absolutely is caused by either driver or hardware.
Should everyone who has t61p do testing(run bioshock or something else)?
thank you
I believe the problem is caused by the "double stacked" memory sticks. I got a new motherboard and the engineer replaced it with "single stacked" memory and it seemed to solved the problem. I am still using a 2GB double stacked memory so I still see crashes in my games. The game I used is "John Woo presents Stranglehold" and it almost fails everytime with the double stacked memory.

So does this mean theres go REAL solution to the crashing? Do we have to resort to using single stacked memory until lenovo comes up with a real solution?

If double stack is the issue, where can I get the single stacked memory and being compatible with Lenovo?

I have no idea. I don't think they are on sale anywhere. I am currently still trying to get in touch with the engineer who replaced my mobo.

as reported earlier on in this very same thread I reported that using single stack memory modules (Patriot ones) presents the same issues.
it seems it is not a single vs double stak memory type issue.
it does though look very much it is a single vs double memory module on *some* unfortunate motherboards.

i.c. because my laptop replacement is still having onl6 2 GB. I am hoping to get to 4GB to satisfy the insanity of Vista and apps. I hope that my replacement is fixed with whatever issue there is.
Generalsu, did you get the 4GB from your original laptop when you purchased or addition? I am afraid that it may be fixed for 2GB, but still can not run up to 4GB with 2 sticks.
Waiting for replacement and praying for miracle.

As I said before, It's not the issue of 2GB or 4GB. It's the issue as to whether you use both memory slots or just the bottom one. If they came out with a 4GB memory stick, your system won't have any problems. My system came with 2GB.

There's nothing wrong with the top slot. The 1-dimm thing works in both slots for me.

off topic, since I am only "working towards" testing the graphics problem, but:
I opend my box, and first thing I did was to wipe crapware off the notebook including vista business 64 and all the think* stuff, deleted all partitions (I used the suse 10.2 cd to do that).
then going into the bios, first thing I noticed, well since its the first bios page, is that lenovo handed ma a notbook with an old bios, 1.21, wile there are 2 newer ones. do they really expect a customer to first deal with flashing the bios? what world are thy living in.
apparently 1.21 was screwy, see the fixes (slow hard drive and so on) they did since then (
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 88#changes).
I schould charge them for me doing their job updating the bios.
what bios version do you guys have, having recently received their t61p?
This old bios actually indicates that they gave me a machine that was assemled in august, while 1.26 is from october, (or I even got the planar card from one of your guy's notebooks

, I can imagine well lenovo doing that) . now, having an old probably refurbished machine makes it more likely to have the graphics problem.
I also installed kit of 2x4gb ram (each module is double stacked) and I am running memtest86+ right now.

Good to hear you are unpacking your Lenovo boxes there, Toby. My T61p was received two days ago with the following BIOS:
Manufacturer : LENOVO
Version : 7LET56WW (1.26 )
Date : 07 October 2018
Address : 0xE000 on 4096 KB
DMI Version : 2.4
Good to know its good until 2018!

Regarding bios versions, this has been discussed already earlier in this thread. So have bios settings, driver versions, etc... Almost every variable has been explored by someone by now
As for the single-stack memory, I think someone earlier in this thread said they still had the problem even with single-stack memory. Also, my original laptop had this problem with double-stacked RAM, but my new one works perfectly with double-stacked RAM.
Last time I posted I wasn't sure if my issue was fixed, but I have done a lot of gaming since then and I can confidently say that it absolutely DOES NOT have these crashing and poweroff problems any more. It is using the same 4 gigs of double-stack RAM as before, and the same hard drive and OS install and drivers as before.
I have not had the slightest hiccup or problem of any kind with the new laptop.

guys,
I just saw there is an updated driver from Microsoft Update site for NVidia 570M. I'm on the loaner right now without much of the issue.
Old: *.5666 updated on Sept
New: *.5685 updated on Dec
for those who have the issue, can you try it out and share with the group?

sorry, for second post, but it is for different subject
Lenovo has the new update BIOS. I saw something that may be useful for those who has not sent in the laptop:
CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
Version 2.07-1.08
[Important updates]
Nothing.
[New functions or enhancements]
- Added the new error code 1830 to indicate that a single DIMM is not
installed in the memory slot 0.
Solution for the error code:
With a single DIMM, install the DIMM into the memory slot 0 (a slot
different from having used it).
[Problem fixes]
- Unexpected interrupts from the USB controller may occur.
- System with NVIDIA graphics chip may cause system hang.

Yes, the new BIOS showed up in my Lenovo ThinkVantage system update today.
All installed.
It would be interesting to see if this helps those having video card problems.

Pocket,
The thread or the BIOS?
The description of the BIOS download is pretty descriptive of the problems discussed in this thread.
You can google and pull down the BIOS separately from the Lenovo system update.

I wonder if Lenovo updated your BIOS to the 2.07 before shipping the PC to you?

Wow, this is very exciting news! I would love to try this out, but I'm at the school library at the moment...
Can anyone confirm that the new BIOS update fixes the crash/lock up issue with the RAM? Thanks!

I wish Lenovo kept this page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67853
truly up-to-date.
following the links they do have update information, like for the BIOS Update Utility case, though.

Well I considering that I started this thread way back when the T61p first came out, I think I have a fair idea what's going on

I found it on the Lenovo support page, but it doesn't appear in the driver matrix or in System Update. Also, I have to waste another CD by putting a 4MB file on it?

Nope, just checked, the new hotness laptop that never crashes has bios version 1.26 with controller version 1.06.
EDIT: OMG.... I just noticed, the other laptop that is sitting here, which is majorly unstable, has bios version 1.22, an older version! I wonder if that version of bios is to blame for the instability... I'm gonna update the BIOS on both these machines and see what happens...
Maybe version 1.22 is a really bad version, because this laptop is severely unstable, it has powered itself off before while sitting in the BIOS screen! Either that, or the hardware in this laptop is bad...
For whatever reason, the new laptop has been stable on bios 1.26, but the loaner laptop I had before was not stable and it had bios version 1.26. I wonder if bios 2.07 would have made the loaner laptop stable, I wish I still had it to test on!
I hope the new bios does fix the problem for you guys! Try it and see! I will let you know if it fixes this broken laptop here.
Does anyone who is experiencing crashing and poweroffs have the new bios 2.07? I hope people will try the new version 2.07 and find out if it fixes anything!

OK.. so updated to the new BIOS 2.07 (and the new NVIDIA device driver available through the Windows Update service) and same crashes when playing 'Pirates of Caribbean Online' (not the most intensive 3D game out there).
it seems more and more a defective hardware issue

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how you managed to get bios 2.07-1.08 version.
I don't see it anywhere.
Thanks

I got it via System Update...
or if you go to the official "Drivers and software - ThinkPad T61, T61p":
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67853
and follow the BIOS you will get to the new release (see my previous post about this).

Version 2.07-1.08
Issue date December 6, 2007
hum... it seems few weeks old already and I wonder if this BIOS release has been tested against one of the known systems provided by other members of this forum who definitely experienced the kind of problems reported in this thread.

Bummer!
Maybe there are still two problems that had been out there.....one was solved by the BIOS?
The second still needs a new motherboard to solve?
Hopefully, others can post their results with the new BIOS.
Good luck to everybody on this one....

BIOS update installed and tested:
I STILL ENCOUNTER CRASHES/LOCKUPS!
This update didn't do anything to fix my problem. Guess I'm taking out the other stick of ram...or sending my thinkpad to the depot.

Send the PC back to the depot! This should be fixed by Lenovo.....it is not right.
By the way, what was your gaming test that you ran?
