!!! this is probabley a vista issue but, when I was trying out the fn + F keys i hit fn + f12 which is supposed to hibernate... ok fine but what it did was turn the screen blank. I tried holding power button for 'less than 4 seconds' like you are supposed to but this puts it into sleep mode. I tried hard restarting several times but the computer ends up with a totally blank screen where I can just see - and move the cursor. I can boot into recovery mode and into safe mode. Does anybody know what is wrong or how I can fix this? I am desperate please help

Ive run thinkpad recovery and ran a full hardware diagnostics test - nothing is wrong, ive tried booting in safemode and disabling all startup applications. Still, it never makes it to the windows vista logo - just the black abyss with only a cursor. I am currently trying a system restore

ok system restore worked! I believe the problem was a driver for the virtual image drive program "magicISO" please let my mistake be a model for everyone out there

ok talked to friend and he said he had the same problem with his (older) thinkpad so this means it is not related to vista OR the driver... His solution was to take out the battery fora while and when he started u pagain later it would work
