No UWB in my T61p - any reason to be upset?

#1 Post by atekant » Sat Aug 18, 2007 9:18 pm

For some reason I have been thinking that all T61ps had UWB. But the tabook says for my model (6460-67U):
UWB: None (uses Half-Mini PCI Express slot)

I understand the "None" part (Harumph!)
But what does the "uses Half-Mini PCI Express slot" mean?
That it would have used the slot (and I can plug one in later)? Or tha it needs that slot and I don't have it?

If it is upgradeable, is it going to need a special antenna as well?

I suppose with nary a Wireless USB device around, it may not seem like a big deal, but you never know, CES is just around the corner.

I don't know about the T61p, but I did see a thread awhile back, I believe it was an X series. The particular model in question only had one of two Mini PCI slots available. The place where the other one would go did not have a slot connector. This only affected certain ones of the series. There was a pic of the system opened up, where you could see where a slot connector could go, but there wasn't one soldered in. I am guessing the same thing is true of your system. It stinks, I agree. :x

If I find the thread, I will post back.

EDIT: Here is the thread I was thinking of.

More on PCI Express slots

#3 Post by atekant » Sat Aug 18, 2007 10:03 pm

tabook says:

Three Mini PCI Express slots / only 802.11 wireless is customer upgradable

So I should have two free (Assuming the other two are for WWAN, Turbo mem, and UWB).
Of course "not customer upgradable" might mean just the same as the X problem, no hardware at all, and requires soldering.

I might take a look once I receive the tp.

For 15.4" T61p that comes with Wireless USB, it has 3 minipci express slots. Two of them are full slots (one for WiFi and one for either flash memory or WWAN). The 3rd slot can only hold half height minipci express card and the WUSB card is one of those.

Please see the 2nd photo in this thread.

Thanks Chad, the notebookreview thread is excellent.
And looks like in a day or two they will install it and see if it works at all.

The information I have stated only select T61 15.4'' CTO models come with UWB.

Good luck with that info on NBR and make sure you do know what you would be doing with your machine.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.
