External USB drive will not spind down

#1 Post by Oaklodge » Fri Aug 24, 2007 12:16 pm

I have a Lacie Big Disk connected to my T60p (Vista) via USB.

The only time the disk will spin down is when I power off the laptop. Going to sleep or sitting idle the drive continues to spin.

How do I get it to spin down when its not being used ?

If I connect it using Firewire via an Express card adapter then it seems to spin down correctly.

Any ideas please ?

There is no way to control power management in an external enclosure because it should have been built into the enclosure itself.
You might check to see if there is any way to control voltage on the USB and Firewire port. It might help reducing power consumption and hence the noise as well.

Firewire seems to work correctly with power management.

USB is where the problem is.
