T61 - Touchpad DOA?

#1 Post by Kryptonic » Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:13 pm

Hi guys,

My T61 arrived today (to replace my old T42) and i love it - accept it has a major problem... straight out the box, boot into Vista Business and the trackpad / red nipple doesnt respond at all! I plugged a USB mouse in, its not even in device manager... i looked in BIOS and its set to Automatic (not disabled)... I even put my Vista Boot DVD in and got to the "setup vista" screen (where normally there is a mouse pointer, and nothing!!)

I carefull took the palm panel off to expose the connections and they look ok!

Can anyone help me find the problem before i RMA my nice new laptop :-(

Cheers guys
Will

1. Right Click on desktop > Properties > Mouse Pointers > UltraNav

Make sure settings are check marked and enabled there.

2. Also, make sure you have latest drivers for UltraNav installed:

UltraNav driver for Vista 32 Bit.

UltraNav driver for Vista 64 Bit.

3. Do a factory Restore.

4. If nothing helps then contact lenovo.

P.S. Red trackpoint is connected to keyboard, I suggest you reconnect it's cable as well.

Shocking. Doesn't Lenovo test the laptops before shipping them? I'd think a non-functional trackpoint and trackpad would be among the easiest defects to detect!

I agree that is a troublesome development if it is widespread. Since this is the first thread that has reported it, lets give it a few weeks B4 we pull the panic cord eh?

No one tells about panic. Before I request a t61, I read some posts. I rember this one, encounter the same issue...

PS : When palm rest is disconnected, the trackpoint works fine. So I can work until new one arrives.

This is worrisome even if these two T61's are the only two that have ever had such a problem. Like I said, non-working trackpoint and/or touchpad are very obvious defects that can be identified very easily -- all one needs to do is turn on the machine and get into Windows! It suggests that Lenovo doesn't always test the units before shipping them, or at least doesn't always test them carefully. If this is one of the "corners" they are cutting to help them make Thinkpad prices more competitive, they are making a huge mistake.

I am not panicking. I am condemning.
