Does Verizon Broadband in T61p (Builtin) supports Rev. A?

#1 Post by sinanju009 » Sat Sep 01, 2007 1:53 pm

Hi -

Just ordered a T61p wuxga with the Verizon broadband. Does it support Rev. A? Have a current PCMCIA card that supports Rev. 0. Want to get rid of it and use only the builtin card *if* it is faster. Otherwise, I will get a Rev A external card.

Qty Component Description
1 42X0819 SBB NVIDIAQUAD FX 570M W/WWAN

Thanks!!

FYI, I'm getting excellent speed on a T61 that demonstrate Rev A.

Using http://myspeed.visualware.com on integrated WWAN, I consistently get 728 kbps download and 789 kbps, far better upload max ever of 136 kbps on my old Kyocera KPC650 (non Rev A) @ 100% signal strength.

I'm also getting excellent signal strength, far better in my home than I ever did with external antennas, so design is apparently effective, although I haven't taken that T61 on the road yet (upcoming T61p will be mine, and will be on the road a lot).

tinkererguy,
I have never signed up for the Verizon EVDO as I understood you could not use if for Voip communication, like in Skpe, and that there were some restrictions even in the area of video downloading, etc.. Do you use yours for Skype or any video downloading?
thanks,

Yeah, have done some brief uses (<1hr per week) of my Slingplayer video streaming and some YouTube stuff, works fine, but your question is more about the contract. I've been a heavy EVDO user for about 2 years now, and the dialer is telling me 2620 hours, 875 sessions, and 530MB total, but those #s sound way off to me, given the # of CDs I've downloaded over EVDO (when no other network is available), I'd say it's more like 1GB per month usage.

I worried too about the wording of their contract (not really unlimited), but after traveling and a few dozen tests of Verizon versus Sprint and nearly always getting ~2x performance from any given spot (airports, datacenters, hotels, etc), sticking with Verizon, and hoping I don't get cut off someday.

I don't actually use VOIP on my laptop, so I don't know about Skype. Comparitively though, the signal strength is great, and the internal design a whole lot more convenient than dealing with USB and dialer, etc.

Hey tinkererguy,
Appreciate the feedback. That's the kind of stuff I need to know. I'd like to know if anybody has used Skype. I've heard some pretty discouraging stores from other Verizon users about having their service cut off over issues related to contractual restrictions.
