T61p brightness keeps resetting upon reboot

I have a T61p that just started resetting the brightness setting to the lowest available upon each reboot. I haven't modified any of the power settings, which have the display brightness set for the maximum on both battery and plugged-in states anyway. Is there some other place that could be telling the display to shut down to its minimum level upon each booting?
Thanks!

this must be a vista issue. i've found that it resets in vista but doesn't reset in server 2003 or XPP.

The T61 here (Windows XP) actually resets brightness to maximum upon every reboot. The display brightness setting of 6/15 in Power Manager is ignored. It's quite inconvenient to have to manually set the brightness level upon every reboot.

This seems to be a "feature" of Vista:
Control Panel > Power Options
Click the "Adjust the display brightness" link on the left side panel.
Select from the slide bars the brightness that will be defaulted to when starting up, resuming from sleep or hibernate.
