HELLO T61...GOODBYE T60p!

Well...I must say it was worth the wait!!

For about a year I have been trying to "intruduce" the ThinkPad line into work. We have several, but they are for odds and ends; nothing I can call an "acomplishment".

I tried and tried and always got the BOOT..LOL! Either because they were too expensive (about $200-$300 over competitors) or because they just did not want them -exact words!!-. I tried to make my case; but always lost...

I had some problems with my tablet and the headache that it caused ; made me NOT submit any more ThinkPad requests for big projects. Getting the T60p and re-evaluating the ThinkPad offerings changed that...I submitted a proposal several weeks ago (about 4 weeks) and I had the machines on hold!! SNEEKY...I KNOW but ;) have to always be prepared.

Anyways, signed approvals were received on thursday of last week; so today I received 50 ThinkPad T61 machines "LOADED"!! No WWAN but everything else it pretty much there.

I did the sales pitch... AGAIN, about how the ThinkVantage technologies can help us!! This time they listened and we are going forward...unfortunately if this bites me in the ars...well, lets just say they will not take my comments into consideration...

Of course in that count there is a machine for myself, so out to someone else goes my Dell!! I must say it is a nice machine, but the T61 is better.

The T61 is not configured, so I am working on that as I type on my Dell. I have the T60p next to it and GUESS WHAT!! The T60p is SO MUCH DIMMER on the LCD than the T61...AMAZING...I figured the T60p would be much britter but it turned out to be the opposite.

Some features of the T61 I like:

1-FireWire - A must in this day and age...everything seems to be either USB or firewire...

2-SD card reader - AWESOME!!

Dislikes:

1-LCD bezel looks CHEAP...and when I say CHEAP I am being generous.

2- NO SERIAL PORTS - YES WE STILL USE THESE and the DELL's still have them. Since I use them; I have to use a USB to SERIAL adapter on my devices going forward.

3- Did I mention the CHEAP LCD BEZEL? How about the fact that the LCD is off-center from the BEZEL-something that IBM has done in the past- however Lenovo put "ridges on the left and top portion of the LCD bezel making the left "thicker" portion of the bezel STAND OUT like a sore thumb...

These were ordered per the "standard" configuration with 1GB of RAM; and an additional 1GB was ordered and installed. A PITA to do...in this case; they were "pre-configured" by my re-seller...so no pain in my part.
It would have been since to see a "slot cover" on the bottom of the machine...

ON a side note...NO MORE PHONE CORDS, I have generated my share of NEW phone cords going straight to the trash. I was glad to see that Lenovo did away with this worthless item...

So far so good...

PS: Wish me luck :)

I guess you have a 14inch 4:3 T60p? Coz the 15inch ones come with very good LCDs.

Yes the T61 should have brighter screens, but along with that comes a good deal higher black levels, so what you are seeing is that the T60p was more "calibrated" than the T61. Manufacturers always have touted brightness as a sales talk, and it also does sell.
(Like loud music sounds better to some in DBTs)

One thing i was puzzled by is that the Flexviews actually never got above 170 cd/m^2 in many tests, while the datasheet for the Idtech UXGA flexview goes to 210 cd/m^2. This means that IBM/Lenovo is limiting the performance of the inverters somewhat - and that they actually can get brighter.

I have a T61 due for delivery in a couple of weeks. I'll compare the screen brightness to my 15" Flexview T60p and post pics...

MOD EDIT: Snipped for excessive quoting.
