Hello,

Because of very long start up times and the intergrated Intel Flash memory, I want to use Hibernation instead of the normal shut down. Unfortunately, pressing Fn+F12 or Windows Start Button - Hibernation or closing the lid, does not result in Hibernation but in the Windows Vista Login screen. Nothing more. I waited quite a bit and tried it several times but there is just the login screen.

I also looked at the Power Manager, closing the lid should put the Thinkpad in Hibernation. This is especially bad, because I found my Thinkpad running after 2 hours (with closed lid) thinking it was in hibernation.

This will be a stretch, but it may be helpful - unsure.

I had an odd situation on my T61 that could have been viewed as Hibernation not working, but in reality it turned out that the Hibernation was working, but something was "waking" the machine up (similar to a Wake-on-LAN feature). I could see what was happening to me possibly looking like hibernation wasn't working.

Here's what happened to me and how I fixed it (with help from RonS on this forum). In my case, I would put the system into hibernation. The process started to work, disk would get active (storing information from memory), system would start to go into hibernation and would often get to a fully hibernated state (black screen, no LED's lit). However, if the system was plugged into a LAN cable, it would mysteriously come back out of hibernation without any action on my part. Time frame varied from right away to 5 minutes from the time the system went into hibernation.

Short story slighlyt longer - I turned off all Wake-on-LAN and Intel AMT features and I check that schedule entries didn't include the "wake the computer" option. Ron then pointed me to an option I never would have found - in the Device Manager, under network adapters, look at the properties for the network device. Go to power management and uncheck the "allow this device to wake the computer".

I believe what may have been happening is that the router, or some other device in the network was sending a packet to my computer and when the packet came to the correct IP address, the network would restart the computer.

Prior to finding the solution, another way I dealt with the problem was to put the system into hibernation and unplug the LAN cable.

Thanks for your help. I tried all these things but nothing help. When I try to go to hibernation, the display becomes black and I can hear one Windows sound and one Laptop beep. But the power LED is always on, and after 15 sec of black display, the display turns on again and the Windows Vista login screen is there with "locked" under the user name and the password box.

Calling the Lenovo support ended up in reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Manager Drivers. But did NOT solve the problem. The next step would be reinstalling Vista but I would like to avoid that if I could solve it differently.

Are there any other suggestions how I could solve this problem? Thanks for any hints.

Not being a VISTA user, this might not be of any help but, with XP, if there is a certain amout of RAM installed (more than 1MB, I think) you need a patch in order to get hibernation to work following a recent Windows update. I am unsure, though, whether this was an update particular to XP or whether the same applies to VISTA also.

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, nothing mentioned above did NOT solve the problem. I didn't run the Disk Cleanup wizard. I did run Ccleaner though, but I don't think it caused the problem. Hibernation doesn't work even if a LAN cable is unplugged. Sleep mode works fine. I have Windows Vista Business if it helps.

One time I had a problem with Hibernation not working on my wife's T42 (Windows XP). Turned out it was the Epson C60 printer driver I had recently installed. The C60 was a bit long in the tooth, and the drivers on the CD were not the latest. I uninstalled the printer driver and software, then I went to Epson's site and downloaded a newer driver for this printer. The new driver worked fine, and Hibernation worked.

I say all this because I think you should look for a driver that you have installed that was an XP driver or an early Vista driver. Try to use Microsoft Vista signed (certified) drivers if possible. Suspect the ones that aren't.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS version as well as the latest ACPI Power Management driver and Lenovo System Interface Driver installed to rule out problems there. Also check your Video driver.

Well, I solved it. Hibernation does work. If you want your hibernation working your Windows partition has to be marked as ACTIVE. Mine was marked as inactive in order to dual-boot (Vista/Linux) worked without losing ThinkVantage.

I wonder if it is possible to have Windows partition marked as inactive and to have hibernation working. Does anybody have a clue?

The easiest solution I found is to boot Linux from Vista boot manager. You can use a program EasyBCD to manage Vista boot manager. Now I have both dual-boot and hibernation working.

I have a brand new T61p and experience the same hibernation issue. The display turns black and after some flickering showing the login screen.
I disabled/enabled hibernation, checked the partition (is marked as active).

In another forum someone who set up XP next to Vista with dualboot had the same problem but only solved it by a clean vista reinstall...

I do not have another OS installed, but like him I also shrunk my 200gb default partiton with Paragon Partition Manger in order to set up second partition.

I have all Windows and Lenovo updates installed along with Office 2007 and AVG Antivirus. I did not install any non standard drivers to the system yet.


What else could I try besides reinstalling Vista?..which is ridiculous for a not even 1 week old thinkpad.

i now have the same hibernation problem. i used partition magic 8.5 to resize the partitions, and the C: is marked as active.

I restored Vista using the recovery partition and then doing a custom restore without any additional software selected.

I think the problem is that Vista was already installed when I shrunk the partition. The custom restore used the first partition to reinstall Vista and let the 2nd one untouched. After that I had a clean and faster Vista and everything worked.

However, the hibernation problem got flipped around. Now when I resume from hibernate and let the system just sit there for a minute without doing anything it goes straight back to hibernation..

I changed my habits to use the sleep feature as it is much faster and power loss is usually not a problem for notebooks.
Someone messed that up as well, though. After putting the thingpad to sleep, almost anything will wake it up. Among the useful are pressing Fn-key or mouse button, among the uselessessest are unplugging the mouse or putting the power cord back in.

i've deleted the recovery partition as i use much more advanced backup software than the solution offered by lenovo or vista ultimate's built in (acronis true image with universal restore BTW)

so i'm stuck without hibernate or sleep now... did you try asking partition magic's support people on how to restore hibernation?

one thing is for sure: i'm going to start looking at partitioning as the cause of all sleep disturbance. i'm done fiddling with the 100 other possible causes.

I also tried everything I could find.

My guess is that Vista didn't like the relocating of files during repartitioning.

Recently I read that Xp and earlier OSs had different (shorter) MBR lengths and that stupid partitioning tools would compromise Vista's longer one. I read that about gparted, I think. Maybe that comes into play as well.

But it still doesn't explain why the partition was recognized and working and only hibernation messed up..
I left the 2nd partition untouched and just restored vista to the 1st one and had no problems so far..

If you already have TrueImage, then you probably know about the Acronis Disk Director Suite. Makes a very good impression on me.

jo2008, it seems that PM8 doesnt support vista, so it's very likely it DID cause the problem with hibernation going away. have you tried to contact symantec/norton?

I used Paragon Partition Manager, not Partition Magic. The Paragon page says that it's Vista compatible.

just an update: a recently release lenovo power manager patch solved my laptop's sleep problems. it still won't hibernate though... i will probably have to reformat but who needs hibernation when you can sleep?
