TP T61P Vista slow wireless

My son just received his new T61P with Vista loaded on it. He was very fired up about it until he tried downloading his favorite tools off the web over our wireless network installed at home. It was unbelievable slow. I was not sure where to begin in identifying the problem so I did a high level download bench mark test using my T42 running XP against his machine downloading the same file. It wasn't even close. XP completed the download in 15 seconds where as the Vista machine was taking over 10 minutes. Next I connected the vista machine to the Netgear wpn824v2 router and to my surprise the download speed improved significantly. The t61p was ordered with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. I still have not ruled out Vista as been the root case I need to make sure that I have not over looked any setting on the TP. Does anyone have any suggestions as what if any TP changes I need to consider. From a Vista stand point I have disable all the firewall and Norton features that might be causing the slow downloads. thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestion.
MOD EDIT: Moved from X6x forum to T6x.

Well, your problem seemed to have so many possibilites. For the start, please update your software using:
1) Thinkvantage System Update
2) Windows Update
You may want to try plugin your wired Ethernet to your router because it will gonna take a long time with your current wireless problem.

Make certain you have the latest Lenovo Vista driver for the 3945ABG installed. You can find it here....

The earlier 3945ABG drivers for Vista had definite performance issues.

The setting that made the biggest difference for me in wireless performance was setting the power savings mode from maximum power saving to maximum performance. These settings can be found in the power options in the control panel. My latency went from 300ms to around 100ms in games and download speeds improved drastically.
