T61 Design?

Hi there,

I have a very specific problem. I have made decision to buy my first ever notebook. I decided for ThinkPad T series since all my friends have T60/T60p's. I like thinkpads especially for their design. With Standard 14" screen and narrow frame there are very compact, great for carrying around.

Now do my dismay I have find out that Lenovo had essentially changed design of T61 series. There is this extra space of plastic case (I guess for speakers) to the sides of keyboard! Moreover a wider plastic frame around the screen.

I had searched through internet and this forum for T61 pictures with STANDARD 14" screen! But unfortunately I have found any. I still believe that his extra space around keyboard and screen is only for T61 with 15" screens. I just want to be sure.


Please can You post me some pics of T61/T61p with 14" Standard screen(I mean the smallest screen available in T61)?

If there will be this ugly excessive plastic cover I rather buy T60/T60p form Ebay then T61/T61p.

I am pretty sure the photos you saw were the 14.1" widescreen T61. I've seen one in person and think it's the ugliest Thinkpad ever made. The 14.1" standard screen version looks very much like the 14.1" T60.

Now I was finally able to see for my self T61p 14" Standard screen. It looks great. Little bit wider frame on top of the screen, but not to much.

Now I have one more question. Have to make sure I am buying 14" Standard screen? When buying from Lenovo web site? 14.1 SXGA+ TFT is the choice?

Yep! Make sure you don't see any 'W' in there.

All T61/p have off centered screen regardless of Standard or Widescreen models which you'll barely notice.

As far as speakers are concerned:

T61/p 14.1 Speakers on the bottom
T61 14.1 W Speakers on the side bezels
T61/p 15.4 Speakers next to Status indicators and volume/Thinkvantage blue button.

At this moment I am decided to buy older T60/T60p.

I am already used to their design and as I have found out T61/T61p with Standard 14" screen are not available with 256 mb graphic card only 128 mb, which is important to me.


For the rest, I don't see that much difference in hardware between T60 and T61.

From what I've read, the T61 is much cooler than the T60. I used a T60 for five months and was not happy with its extremely warm palmrest.
