!!random shutdowns - t61p- ANY OS, not just vista

In all fairness its not VISTA 64 or VISTA 32,
this is a hardware problem and is not from OS, we should continue in this thred.
Can i ask lenovo to give me a full refund? and then make the order again? even though the sale is over?
Or will i have to pay full price
I want to do it this way cuz if the NEW one is also defective then i can not get a full monie back as you have only 20 days to do so.
and now its at day 18.

Yes, i have the same.
3 year onSITE.
now the problem is that this is already my second one.
I just want my monie back now
its a heat issue.
You see, when i put a BIG fan in front of the laptop pointing in from the cdROM drive then it will NOT shutdown.
THEREFOR: heat HIGH limit is cutting out.
This is a ... i dont know.. bad mother board DESIGN.
at this point i want a full monie back, incase it happenes again on the next one I will ask for a NEXT monie back and not get the same thing.
what do you think?

but others with stock RAM aren't having the same problem and if it was a bad motherboard design there would be a hell of a lot more complaints - a defective MoBo on the otherhand...

Your almost right, but............
This setup came with only SINGLE chanel ram.
when me and you upgraded the ram it now became DULE chanel.
This case calles for more use of the north and south bridge. There for there SPEEDS are in fact running faster.
To that affect its running hotter.
In conclusion its a bad design.
I relly will give it one more try. BUT first i will get my full monie back and then RE ORDER to protect my self.
Its my right as a consumer (a sucker who just blew $3000) to have that opertonitiy for full monie back in this rare case.

I beg to differ sir.
It's the bad memory module you installed.

I am actually having exact the same problem with 2 2GB lenovo RAM Modules.
Neither in XP, nor Vista 32 or Vista 64 any game works correctly.
All patches applied. All Drivers tested.
But the problem only occurs during gaming, I think, dont use Windows much for other things.
I am no specialist, but considering that other Applications like running 3 VMWares in parallel work rock solid (linux) I dont think it's the memory, must be the video card or Windows?

Try taking out one DIMM and see if it works.

Ok, cut the SIR stuff.
What makes you think its the ram? no relly.
last night i was play UT 04 and i was watching HD movies again on two screens. this time i put a BiG fan in the front of the laptop and it did not shut offf.
that is why I think its the HEAT.
Maybe its the ram like you say.
But when it did not shut down this time due to the fan i would sumize that heat is the colpret.

@PocketAces
Yup, this solves the problem, Thanks. Fascinating.
What is this? kernel? Chipset Driver?
The funny thing is on kernel 2.6.16 openGL runs fine. In kernel 2.6.22 using openGL shuts down the displaymanager, same symptom as in Windows.
So to me it seems that it is definitly not the video-card driver, it is not the memory, not the heat (shuts down after 10 secs, starting TwoWorlds in the intro movie) and not the the video-card itself.

by schnipel
As it seems it really is the chipset driver. Though it is hard to imagine how it should make its way through the test suites.
Nevertheless, no more problems until now with 4GB.
--> openGL causes windowmanager to crash on Kernel 2.6.22 + NVIDIA 570M
--> Intel Chipset support 6 for Windows V 8.2.0.1012
SEEMS to cause above mentioned problems

This is fact.
Is it problem from them? i dont know, is it just mine, i dont know.
Where is the bull.
Also, what laptop do you have and how fast is it?
I will be willing to yander that if your laptop is under the speed of 2.4 that it is not shutting down, so please even though u r a mod. please dont accuse me of bull, cuz i dont like animals.

Not sure if this helps, but I found my T60p (running vista) couldn't survive more than ~15 mins of SecondLife without crashing/hanging.
After a while I realised it was overheating - both CPU and GPU were exceeding 100 deg.C
I ended up installing "tpfancontrol" to ensure the system temperature was kept under better control, and even flat out SL etc can now run for hours without a failure.
My conclusion - bios fan control algorithm/settings are flawed.

thanks for the advice, I'll try the tpfancontrol if the problem is not fixed - I ordered a box Sunday and got it Tuesday - sent it back that same day

Well, I know my CORE both of them is not going over 92c no matter what i do.
So that is good,
However its the total heat generated that is killing the power.
I mean, im not freezing or haulting, Just shut off!!
I think this is a bad laptop, I will let you know what happenes with the new one.

I tried it but no go, as im useing VISTA 64bit (to show my LENOVO 4gb dule chanel ram) it gives ERROR
ERROR DURING INITIALIZATION OF WINIO DRIVER. (WINIO.SYS MISSING IN APP FOLDER OR FAILD TO LOAD)
So i went to Vista 32 bit and it does not work on a T61p
Did u get it it work?

You were quick to quote me on lenovo quoteing me 'You will get a new one in 3 days'
Well 'SIR' its now been 6 days, and i have not got a NEW one yet.
They say its in another department and i have to wait untill tomrow.
That has been the story every day now.
Humm... I wonder about Lenovo. Why would they do this?
This is my second laptop (first was R60)
now the T61p and Im getting a throw around.
I wonder if i should goto DELL and get me a super gameing CPU that will run HOT like mad but it will not shuttoff.

I have two T60s, one crashes and shuts down by itself due to excessive heat. I ran tpfancontrol on both and one showed greatly higher readings than the other.
I also tested by placing my hand next to the vent on both units. On one I could hold my hand there for ten seconds. On the other I couldn't. This could be a clue.

No offense here but you need to improve your communication skills, you never mentioned what was your second one until today.
Lenovo has promised you a new machine so be patient you'll get one. It takes a while for machines to arrive from asian manufacturing centers.
Thinkpads are not for you if you're a hardcore gamer, they're designed merely to fulfill business oriented requirements.
Lastly CA is California not Canada.
Good Luck!

Hello,
We all know the enmie to electronics is heat.
Also for computers when they get hot they do work slower and maybe even crash.
In this case however, they computer is POWERING OFF, no warning just like pulling they plug.
As for your two t60 computers are they same FRU/Model #?

I am a CET student ( Computer Engineering Student ) and dont play games at all, i have 7 class and its a FULL load. So no time for games.
I play UT 2004 and that is what shuts it down.
Also, if i do multi-tasking NOT GAMES it will also shut down.
NOTE: i called tech supp again and this time they said that it is not infact 3 days and not 5 days (like they told me each time i called)
They said i have to now wait 21 days for a laptop and box .
Humm.. why are they pushing me around? cuz im from Canada EH?
Buddie on this thred said he got his in 1-2 days right?
i gotta wait 21?
That makes no sence.
What do you guys think I should do? Just wait the 21 days?

well when I called they said a depot repair would have a 3-5 turnaround time, however if I wanted a new laptop it would take much longer... I sent my lappy in on Tuesday, prolly took 2 days to get there and a couple days to get back so maybe I'll see it on Monday? I'll tell you if I'm still experiencing the problem

It makes sense if you go back and re-read his post. The BOX he was talking about was the shipping box sent from the REPAIR center to send his TP in for service. He never requested or received a new TP nor had to ship his TP back to Lenovo Corporate.
Does this make more sense now? I hope I have not interpreted this thread incorrectly or I will have to include a big RED FACE emoticon next

So your sending in for them to repair it?
I would never allow them to open a 3000dollar laptop so they can put a new MB in it.
That is crazy. I would rather have a whole new one.
Question: if it does the same thing are you going to ask for a FULL refund of the purchace price?

i agree...i wouldn't want a brand new computer being take apart when it could just be exchanged..
