Kaspersky AV 6.0 on a T60?

I have had major problems with my first attempt to install Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 on my T60. Has anyone done this with complete success?

Background: I bought my new T60 in May of 2007 after much deliberation over what to me was a major purchase. At the end of August, the 90 day trial of the preload Symantec Client Security ended. I normally abhor Norton retail products, but I must admit I have been impressed by the simple, clean user interface and overall stability of the Symantec corporate product loaded on the T60. I was ready to just "re-up" and subscribe for another year. Following the link to Symantec, I found that the "single license version" of SCS is "no longer supported". I have read very negative user feedback about NAV 2007 and NIS 2007, so I decided to try Kaspersky AV 6.0 on the new T60.

I have previously installed KAV 6.0 on two other machines with good success, one running XP Home, and the other, my venerable 600E listed at the bottom of the page. In both cases, I used guidelines from the Kaspersky user forum moderator to insure all remnants of Norton/Symantec products are removed from the system before installing KAV 6.0. Norton is notorious for leaving junk behind after using "Add/remove programs", which can slow KAV if not cleaned up.

Fortunately, as it turned out, I did a back-up :) on the T60 right before the attempt. I uninstalled all the Symantec products thru "add/remove", ran the downloaded Norton removal tool, and cleaned up afterwards, using the Kaspersky user forum guidelines. The KAV 6.0 seemed to install OK, but on re-boot, major grief....I could not get past the finger swipe. I suspected a conflict between the default KAV boot scan and the imbedded security chip. I ultimately found I had to disable the security chip in bios set up, then boot to safe mode and disable the KAV boot up scan. When the T60 finally would boot, I thought I was at a Dr. Watson convention.....major errors. I finally had to roll back......

Sorry if there is TMI in the previous sentences....I am pretty frustrated over this. I am going to try again....the KAV activated during the install, so the clock is running. Any help would be appreciated!

I joined the forum because I have experienced a fair number of intermittant quirks (wireless issues, hangs, etc.) with my T60, but I will save these for other posts. Judging by the number of posts about T60 issues, I am not the only one who has had problems.....sadly, I am not currently a satisfied owner. My old 600E is as slow as a slug, but it is solid. I bought the T60 to help me do my everyday job, not to have it become my job! I have had to spend way to much of my spare time prodding this beast to make it behave. I have even been tempted to blow it all away and do a clean install of WIN XP Pro SP2...

Thanks for listening to Old Sparky's tale of woe!

BTW: I have built/maintained/repaired my PC's since 1999. I would say I have above average amateur PC experience.

Kaspersky is at version 7 now...

I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 7 on my T42 without any problems. I do not have a fingerprint reader, and I do not use CSS or the security chip. I have not read of your problem before with Kaspersky.

Regarding Norton, I have read that even after running the Norton Removal tool, there are still traces left in the registry. You could launch regedt32 and delete all keys that reference Norton or Symantec.

It is possible that Norton is not the problem. Maybe you could disable the fingerprint reader temporarily and see if Kaspersky will install correctly.

If the above doesn't help, hopefully someone else that has some better knowledge of this will post a solution for you.

I installed KAV 6.0 and recently upgraded to KAV 7.0.

They both work brilliantly and I prefer them than the bulky Symantec one.

I am using KIS 7 on a T61 and it is working great. No problems with the fingerprint reader.

As soon as I got the T61, I immediately removed Symantec and cleaned up the registry. Previous experience removing Symantec on a T30 was quite involved but I eventually got KIS 6 and now KIS 7 to work very well.

(GomJabber) Kaspersky is at version 7 now...

Yes, I know. Fry's had the KAV 6.0 disc last week at net $0.00 after rebate. Kaspersky will u/g to 7.0 with the 6.0 license. Anyway, that was the plan....BTW: I did do regedit and manually removed entries named Norton or Symantec. I suspect that this may have destablized the machine. BTW: as I stated, the actual installation of KAV was not unusual; the problems began with the attempt to reboot after the installation......

Does your T60 have the imbedded security chip and fingerprint scanner? Also, did you do any more to remove the Symantec products other than "add/remove"? Kaspersky's user forum suggests this procedure http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=5233 I followed these guidelines, plus did a manual regedit. Result:

I tried RegSupreme as suggested by Kaspersky's forum for registry cleaning. The T60 did not respond well to that, either.

Did you do a manual regedit on your T61, or use a registry cleaner?

Thanks, Old Sparky

I used RegSupreme first and then used Regedit to clean up the remaining handful of references to Symantec and Norton. RegSupreme should make a copy of any deletions if you get into trouble. You might also want to make an image backup just to make sure. I have had good luck with Acronis True Image and Shadow Protect.

You might also contact Kaspersky support for help. They are usually very responsive.
