Optical drive issues?

I'm curious if anyone has had a bad optical drive.
I have a Hitachi (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4083N) in one of my T60's utrabays. It is burning a lot of DVD-Video coasters lately, getting lots of bad data towards the end of the program I'm burning.
My two other drives, a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-842 in my other T60's utrabay, and an external Pioneer, both work fine.
The T60 with the bad drive has heat issues, which could be the underlying cause.

I am assuming here software is not an issue.
Run PC Doctor.
Please look into this
this page as well. It has alot of troubleshooting suggestions.
You can also try swapping the ultrabays. I don't see heat being the consequence of this. For heat concern, make sure you have the latest version of
BIOS (a latest version has been released today) installed.
Lastly if nothing helps and if your machine is still under warranty then please call IBM at 1-800-426-7378 (24/7)! for replacement.

Hi,
having a similar issue with the same optical drive (GSA-4083N) on T60 2007-FSG. burned successfuly dvd+r from one package but having problems to burn dvd+r from the other. both verbatim dvd+r 16x. successful one was Verbatim DataLifePlus Advanced AZO PastelDisc and unlucky attempt made on Verbatim Advanced AZO+ from cake of 25 (YUDEN000T03).
i have a suspicion that it will be either the firmware or Sonic weirdo as my girlfriend's T60 2007-FVG behaves the same way.
firmware version on older one (2007-FSG) is 1.08 on newer (2007-FVG) is 1.00
wondering about the experience the others have

I have had major problems with Verbatim CD's made in India. Verbatim's from Taiwan are fine. Oddly, the CD's made in India used a different dye than the ones made in Taiwan. I believe the disks made in Japan should be fine as well. IIRC, the CD's made in Taiwan were labeled: DataLifePlus.
I know I was referring to CD's and not DVD's above, but still, I would avoid disks made in India. I still buy (non-Indian) Verbatim disks, both CD/R's and DVD+-R's. They work great for me.
The following thread might help. You can also use a CD cleaning disk to clean the laser occasionally.

just have given it another try - one more verbatim dvd+r from cake of 25. this time it was burned fine - without any glitch.
only thing i've changed was that i switched DVD recording speed from MAX to 8x (Tools -> Options -> General -> Advanced in Sonic)
success achieved on 2007-FVG with firmware version 1.00
so have to check the other machine as well to see if the speed was the issue or maybe just few wrong pieces from the cake
btw. Verbatims I use are Made In Japan
