Is the Samsung 14" SXGA+ better than TMD?

#1 Post by dickeywang » Fri Sep 14, 2007 10:22 am

Just checked that my coming 14" T61p has a TMD LCD which is the same as my current T60 14"SXGA+. It is said that the 14" SXGA+ can be either Samsung or TMD. I am wondering if the Samsung one will be better than TMD?
I personally think the LCD on my T60 is OK, but sometime I feel it is a bit dim than I would like. I always set the brightness to max because anything lower will be too dim for me.
T60 (2007-66U): upgraded to C2D T7400, 2GB DDR2-667, Hitachi Travelstar 5k250, 14" SXGA+, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (sold).
T61 (8891-CTO): C2D T7300, 4GB DDR2-667, Hitachi Travelstar 5k250, 14" SXGA+, Nvidia Quadro FX 570M (128MB).

I have been doing a lot of message board research about these SXGA+ screens on the T61s. Of all the reviews/opinions/posts I have read from people, no one has gotten the samsung SXGA+, everyone had a TMD SXGA+, including me. Does anyone know anyone that has the Samsung SXGA+?

My research shows that they both have 150 nits of brightness. I can't say for sure if that means they have the exact same brightness or not, but I assume they are probably pretty close.

My T60 had a Samsung 14.1" SXGA+ screen, which was one of the brightest laptop LCDs I had ever used.

my girlfriend's T60 has a samsung (FRU# 13N7059).   it's not a bad screen after calibration but still lacks contrast.

Oh, I wish I had a Samsung. :(
My T60's TMD is much dimmer than my wife's X61.

I have a T61 with a 14" SXGA+ Samsung screen, im on it right now. I too was worried about screen quality, but after using/testing this machine for over a week now i am VERY satisfied. The Samsung screen is great, not 1 dead pixel, very bright (more so than my 14" T43. The only thing that initially bothered me was that while comparing my T43 and T61 side by side, the T43 looked like it had truer white's. The T61 seemed to have a slight blue-greyish tint to it. That was easily fixed by adjusting the screen color resolution in nvidia properties. I was at first bothered by the screen offset from the left, but i could care less after using it for a while now.

I was very skeptical about the T61 since Lenovo took over. BUT--this T61 is definately a Thinkpad. Its rock solid, build quality is great. Hopefully this isnt the last of the 14" 4:3's.

Oh...how do I find out which type of screen I have? And what's the difference? Sounds like huge quality discrepancies?? Thanks...

pcwizard will give you the actual part number of the panel.   parts lookup will give you the FRU number of your panel, then you can search for that number on lenovo.com or within your respective hardware maintenance manual to find the manufacturer.

With todays's technology, why is that ?!
I've had a T23 for 5 yrs and love it. Just got a T60 and I must say that the screen is a HUGE dissappointment. So much so that I'll probably dump the T60.
