High CPU/GPU temperature on T60p solved
Hi all,
I think there have been some discussions about this already and I was inspired by a different post.
My T60p always had CPU and GPU temps at around 100 degrees Celsius. And recently the OS hung quite frequently.
All this started after I replaced my old 2GHz Yonah cpu with the 2.3 GHz core 2 duo.
Today I opened the computer again, and I removed the fan with the copper assembly. I checked the GPU and there is quite a thick pad on the GPU, and even a thicker pad on the northbridge.
I removed both pads, put the thin gpu pad on the chipset, and bended the heatsink so so that the plate thats covering the gpu and the northbridge comes down about 2-3 mm. You have to be very careful when bending the heatsink to not break the soldering
I put arctic silver on the GPU and the CPU and reassembled the whole thing again.
Under full load my cpu/gpu is now at about 81/85 and idles around
74/82.
I hope the crashes are history.
Wolfgang

Of course, yes. But you just have to buy a fan assembly as FRU and install the new one if any serious issue happened. They want be able to notice the fan swap. Lower temps are better and it must not lead to any issue du to HSF mod.
There is a file about GPU and CPU temp for T60. This solution have been already posted.

Just for fun, my T60p fanless during office use :
1 CPU 55°C (0x78)
2 APS 41°C (0x79)
3 PCM 42°C (0x7a)
4 GPU 66°C (0x7b)
5 BAT 50°C (0x7c)
7 BAT 24°C (0x7e)
9 BUS 44°C (0xc0)
10 PCI 49°C (0xc1)
11 PWR 50°C (0xc2)
With fixed fan speed at lowest RPM :
1 CPU 43°C (0x78)
2 APS 38°C (0x79)
3 PCM 37°C (0x7a)
4 GPU 56°C (0x7b)
5 BAT 50°C (0x7c)
7 BAT 24°C (0x7e)
9 BUS 40°C (0xc0)
10 PCI 44°C (0xc1)
11 PWR 41°C (0xc2)

Hmmm that seems decent, combine that with the fact that C2D's are supposed to be more power efficient, an idle temp of 74C seems crazy.DAH wrote:In an 80 degree room I am seeing idle temps of 51~55 degrees C, at 1 GHz with the 2 GHz Yonah cpu under Vista, running all of IBM software in the background. No changes to the factory cooling setup.
Undervolting wont help the idle temp, but perhaps it might help when cpu is under load.

Re: High CPU/GPU temperature on T60p solved
I was getting the same thing with the T60p and now with the T61!!! There are no errors, things just "stop" working for a few seconds and then they resume...freakwave wrote:Snipped, Trim your quotes

74°C should be idle at full speed for the Core 2 Duo.wearetheborg wrote:DAH wrote:

CPU temperature at low speed idle
This is good information. What temperature should the Core 2 Duo be at low frequency (my 2.4 GHz lowest frequency is 1200)?74°C should be idle at full speed for the Core 2 Duo.
