This is what we traded IPS for?!!?

I will never understand the computer industry. Superior tech always gets trumped by junk. I just received a new to me T60p 15.4" 8741-C3U. Overall the system is very nice. Don't like all of the changes in the T60 series but what can you do? What I really am upset about is the washed out, narrow viewing angle, dim Samsung WSXGA+ display.

Let's just say I know what everyone was complaining about. This thing is HORRIBLE. No matter what angle you view it from or how you adjust the display values this thing just plan sucks. While I absolutely LOVE the 15" IPS on my T43p I also have a Z60m with a LG-Phillips WSXGA+ screen that is a joy to use. Not IPS but about as close as I have seen with TN. The fact that Lenovo ever used the inferiour Samsung panel is appalling. The Samsung panel exhibits light leakage, extremely narrow vertical viewing angle, dark corners at the bottom, speckle, washed out ambiguous blue shifted color with low brightness. Unbelievable. Now I just need to figure out what my options are to get this panel replaced. What is the concensus on the WUXGA panel of the T61p? IF I can make it work I will probably swap them out.

T43p 2687-M8U P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15 IPS UXGA
Z60m 2531-MTU P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15.4 WSXGA+

From what I've read, the WUXGA panel on the T61p isn't all that great.

Well, if you really want an IPS, you can always purchase an external IPS monitor. The 20" Apple Cinema Display is a good choice. Some of the higher end NEC monitors also use IPS panels.

The market is guided by what is purchased. IPS was expensive. Not enough orders for the IPS displays so they went away. Now that they are gone everyone wants them :??:

dunno about the WUXGA but the WSXGA+ screen on the T61p is great! Wide viewing angle, nice colors, etc. Manufacturer is a Joint Venture of LG/Philips in Korea.

I just got a 15.4" T61 WUXGA after a long wait. Initially I was very disappointed with the screen, primarily the [lack of] brightness and the decidedly blue cast of the screen.

Tonight however I put it [Vista Ultimate] into 120DPI mode and it made a huge difference - the display looks decidedly better with bigger fonts.

Still bluish but I haven't seriously tried to calibrate it yet. At this point my biggest complaint is that it just isn't very bright.

I could live with the lower brightness. My T43p is not the brightest display but the color depth and sharpness are excellent. I am starting to think LG-Phillips makes the best displays currently available. Anyone else have a take on that?

I have heared about problems around Samsung panels. In mine Z61p there is LP154WU1-A1K6 from LG, you can wiev it in photogalery on the bottom on review here http://notebook.cz/clanky/recenze-noteb ... nkPad-Z61p
and its pretty good in compare with notebook LCDs i have seen in recent time.

i'm extremely happy with the samsung WUXGA panel on my T61p and i've used IPS UXGA panels on various thinkpads for over five years.   i guess i'm in the minority.
