Guide : Installing Windows XP on T60/T61

I noticed that a lot of people don't really now how to install Windows XP and all the drivers. Sorry if I make some mistakes in english. This exemple is for T60p.

Part 1 Windows XP SP2
Note : Use Windows XP with service pack 2 included. SP2 is required to handle some hardware like USB 2.0 or Bluetooth.
- Start your laptop and press F1 to enter BIOS. Go into the config menu and choose SATA. Set the mode to compatible instead of AHCI. Save and exit.
- During reboot, press F12 to choose a temporary boot device. Select optical device.
- Proceed with Windows XP SP2 installation...


Part 2 : Drivers
Note : A driver is needed to handle the hardware. All the following components are younger then Windows XP SP2, so you have to install those drivers...
- Intel Chipset driver to allow Windows XP to recognise and handle the i945GM, SM Bus and ICH7m.
- ATI FireGL V5200 to drive the graphic card.
- ACPI Power Management to drive the Thinkpad Embedded Controller. Solve Unknown device in the device manager. This is not the Power Manager !
- Ultranav use adanced features of the touchpad/trackpoint
- HD Audio Sound Max is the audio driver. kb888111 is needed for Windows XP SP2 to handle HD Audio device. Most time, kb888111 is included with the driver and you don't have to care about. If audio driver did not install, kb888111 may be missing.
- Intel PRO/1000 LAN is the Ethernet driver (cable LAN)
- Intel PRO Wireless wifi driver and applet
- Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is the encryption chipt. Solve Unkown device in the device manager.
- HD Audio Modem to handle le modem. Like audio driver, kb888111 must be installed first (no need to install a second time if already done with audi driver)
- Thinkpad LCD not very important, to have the right name for the screen : ThinkPad Display.
- Fingerprint Software 5.6 driver and application to handle the fingerprint.
- Active Protection System applet to set sensitivity of the airbag like HDD protection.[/url]
- Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software I never use it.
- Don't forget you WWLAN if you got one

Part 3 : Utilities
Note : Lenovo utilities are required to handle all the Thinkpad specific features. You can go without them but you will loose some of them...
- Hotkey driver for OSD (On Screen Display), FullScreen Magnifier, Fn + F2, Fn + F3, Fn + F4, Fn + F5, Fn + F7 and Fn + F12. Important.
- EasyEject Utility for Fn + F9 feature.
- UltraNav Utility for Fn + F8
- Keyboard Customizer allow to remap keys of the keyboard.

Part 4 : Lenovo programs
Note : The follonwing stuff can be called optional, your Thinkpad will run fine without. All adavanced users can go without most of them... I recommand to use at least Power Manager to have a better battery life. Security suite is required to secure the data taking adavantage of the Thinkpad hardware (FPR and TPM).
- Power Manager to create power profile. It show the battery in the task bar.
- Access Connections to set and handle connection profiles. Not requiret to drive Fn + F5.
- Access Help online User's Guide give advice and informations about your Thinkpad : warranty, FRU/CRU, usefull phone number and so on.
- Help Center help in CHM format (Windows Help format).
- ThinkVantage Productivity Center the application launched when you press ThinkVantage blue button.
- Away Manager is the program to set background task when you don't use your Thinkpad.
- System Update 3.0 the application witch download and update the Thinkpad driver, utilites and programs. Microsoft .net is needed.
- Rescue and Recovery 4.1 self-recovery tools. Take care, work close with Client Security Solution.
- Client Security Solution 8.0 to secure your computer. Take care, work close with Rescue and Recovery and Fingerprint software.
- PC-Doctor for Windows

Part 5 : Set AHCI back
Note : AHCI is needed to handle some SATA features like NCQ. I do some benchmark with AHCI and Compatible mode, I go the same results... So only most geek guys want to run AHCI.
- Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver Run C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\install.cmd. Reboot, go to the BIOS and reset the HDD into AHCI mode. When Windows XP found new hardware, force to use drivers within C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM.

You have done it...

I'am sure for all driver but not for all Lenovo applications. I don't use them all. I will update according to request. If your are common with nLite, you can rebluid a Windows XP SP2 CD with a lot of the Thinkpad drivers. You can also add the ICH7m driver and not have to change SATA to Compatible and then back to AHCI.

Hi Pascal,

I own a T60 flexview (ProductID 2008ZWA) and started a clean install of XP Pro, like you did.

The built-in XP Home (US version) with all bloatware was a headache for me.

This is what I've done:

1. In BIOS I've changed bootorder to built-in DVD-drive as nr.1
2. Started up the system with XP Pro (Dutch version)
3. Removed ALL partitions incl. hidden one
4. Installed XP Pro, using F6 for Intel Matrix driver (I've purchased for this purpose an external USB NEC floppy drive. No succes with installing Intel Matrix Driver.
5. Then, in BIOS I changed ACHI in Compatibility mode.
6. Downloaded Lenovo IBM latest Intel Matrix Driver software as well the original and latest Intel Matrix Driver (for ICH7-Mobile ACHI)
7. Installed XP Pro in compatibility mode.
8. Removed ALL partitions, including Hidden partition!!, created a NEW partition of 3 Gig, and installed XP Pro.
9. Expanded Lenovo/IBM Intel Matrix version to "Drivers" folder.
10. Expanded original LATEST Intel Matrix driver.
11. Replaced drivers in "Drivers" folder by latest Intel versions
12. Changed in BIOS SATA Compatibility mode in ICHI and followed instructions to install (afterwards) Intel Matrix (latest) driver.
13. Since then I've a great system, running as smooth as ever.

Oh yeah, installed latest original (compatible) Intel Chipset Inf unitility as well!

I'm as happy as you are with my cleann install.

I use most advanced installation. I have included all the drivers in a custom Windows XP SP2 with all kb updates (using nLite). So, I don't have to use any more Compatible mode. All the hardware is directly recognized during the Installation. Unfortunately, I don't speak english well enough to explain how to do it. But using google, there is a lot of documentation about how to do it.

Later, I will add some screen captures in this file to show a window off the features. This could help people to only install what they need.


PS : Most time, I only install drivers, one utility (hotkey) and a few softwares (Power Manager, Acces Help and Help Center and somtimes Acces connections). My T60p need 30 seconds from power button to Windows desktop : 35 process and ~180 MB used.

Is it possible to get some DVD with XP SP2 Czech Image with all lenovo drivers and utilities preinstalled? I think that Lenovo must have it.

I telephoned support line with ask about downgrade, and they said that they can install all of those, but for a 30 EUR. I think that this is too much, for something called "free downgrade" which is basicaly puting a DVD into a bay and press copy...

Pascal_TTH deserves a pat on the back for mentioning the ACPI Power Management driver as it has finally completed my T61 Vista to XP downgrade.

My process for installing XP on my own T61 differs slightly so here it is.

1. Copy the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver to a floppy disk so it can be installed via F6 during the initial XP install. This is the Lenovo recommended method although Pascal_TTH's method is their "Plan-B".

2. Install Windows XP. I removed the second partition and got XP to recreate it leaving the first partition alone as I understand this can be used to restore Vista at a later date. I also decided not to activate Automatic Updates at this time as I wanted to keep the install as clean as possible.

2. Install the following in order rebooting between each one and pressing ESC to skip past any Windows device driver installation prompts.

a. Intel Chipset Support
b. Microsoft .NET (I used version 2)
c. Atmel TMP
d. Bluetooth
e. 888111US patch
f. LAN or WLAN adapter (whichever you want to use)
g. Lenovo System Update 3

3. Install all the items you need from Lenovo System Update then run Windows/Microsoft Update.

Prior to Step #3 I also installed AVG Anti-Virus Free.

Yes, but you need to check first in your device manager which components are used in your laptop. My exemple is for T60p with FireGL V5200. It will be same for a T60 with a Radeon X1400. But take care, some components are common to all the T60 but not all.

- graphic chip can vary
- wireless card can de different
- fingerprint is optional
- WWAN is also an option

Most other parts are the same for all T60(p). Utilites and Lenovo programs are the same for all ThinkPad.


If you are not sure, you can use the eprice01, it's more easy for *novice*. The way I explain is more usefull for people who plan to build a master and clone/ghost it after.

The first thing I did when I got my T60, was to reformat and install a fresh Windows XP.
Since this was my first Thinkpad I was pretty frustrated that the fan actually went off pretty much the whole time.
Much more noisy than my previous laptops. I felt it was so bad that I was planning to sell it and purchase a MacBook.

BUT,
what I didn't realize until i read this post, was that I had forgot to install "ACPI Power Management" and "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver".
Now my T60 is running so much smoother, and the fan only goes on once in a while.

Although I feel incredible dumb to have forgot to realize this myself, I'm humble and I want to thank you!
So if you ever come to Norway, Mi Casa es Su Casa!

You could also install bare Windows XP and then install "System Update" http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... VSU-UPDATE
Then run System Update, let it find everything you need, uncheck the things you don't want installed and let it do the rest.
