Random Beeping Driving Me Crazy

#1 Post by Snowman88 » Fri Sep 28, 2007 9:19 pm

Hi all,

I have a T60 running Windows XP, and over the past few days my computer has just randomly started beeping a lot. Every minute or so, for no particular reason, I'll get the standard computer beep that you sometimes get when a dialog box pops up, etc. This is NOT the sound that some people get from hitting too many keyboard keys at once, it's completely unprompted. I've tried closing all open programs and it still seems to be happening. I've also checked the computer temperature, and it's running coolly.

Any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

Thanks

Did you install something new or change anything when this started a few days ago? Any changes at all even if you think it's irrelevant. If you use the thinkpad fan control utility i think it's causing a beep by default everytime the fan state change, but this is not the same as you can hear when a dialog box popup. It's just a beep and not a wav file. That could easily be changed for the tpfancontrol though.

Check in Event Viewer for events that occur at the time of the beeping. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Thanks for the response guys. I'm almost completely sure that I haven't added anything new to the computer in the last few days since the beeping started. However, one thing I've noticed is that the beeping seems to start after I've had the computer on for awhile. For example, I'll have the computer on, put it in hibernation mode, take it to class, hibernate it, take it home, and it seems to happen then. I just restarted it a few minutes ago and it has stopped for the time being. I will take a look at the Event Notification when it begins again and let you guys know what pops up.

Thanks :)

Look in the Thinkpad Power Manager, there is a setting for "beep when power state changes", it may have gotten turned on after an update.
