Hello,
After lusting for a T61 for a few months, I finally placed an order. Unfortunately, I didnt know the existence of this forum before I ordered. In any case, please have a look at my specs and suggest changes. As I understand, I can still change the specs. This config cost me 1226$.

Thanks a lot.

* INTEL CORE 2 DUO T7500 (2.2 GHz)
* MS WIN VISTA HOME BASIC ( This was the cheapest. I intend to uninstall vista and run XP Pro and Ubuntu)
* 14.1WXGA +TFT,W/OCAM
* INT.GMAX3100 GM965W/1394 SMARTCARD ( I am not that concerned about graphics and have heard that the integrated card extends battery time. )
*1GB PC2-5300 667MHZ 1DIMM ( This was the least expensive option. I want to replace this with 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2, soon)
*UN(TRACKPOINT+TCHPD)+ FING.R
* 100 GB HDD,7200RPM
* DVDREC8XMAXDUALLAY,UBAYSLM
* PC CARDSLOT ME CARDSLOT
* INT.WIRE.WIFI/LINK4965AGN
* INTEGR.BLUETOOTH PAN
* 4 CELL LI-ION BATERRY ( I am a little anal about the bigger battery sticking out. I assumed that with Ubuntu/WinXP and integrated graphics, I can stretch the 4 cell battery long enough)
* LENOVO THINKPAD ADVANCED ULTRABAY BATTERY - NOTEBOOK BATTERY - LI-ION - 2700 MAH ( for extending battery life on the road)

Get the 6-cell.

4-cell will barely last 2 hours.
