Nonstop fan on T60p with _normal_ CPU/GPU temps?
Hi,
The fan on my T60p never stops running. This one has the ATI FireGL 5250. I am using the "power saver" plan in Windows Vista, and I have enabled ATI Powerplay.
Tpfancontrol reports temps CPU-42, GPU-61, both at idle. Fan is BIOS controlled and never goes below 3300RPM.
I understand there are other topics on T60p fan issues, but they all deal with overheating, which I do not think is the problem here.
Any suggestions?

If you want to experiment, you can use TPFanControl to set the fan speed to zero and see which temperature will the system idle at (make sure you set it back after the experiment).
In my case, I don't have a T60 but my X60 idles at about 42C degree when fan is bios controlled and 64C degree when fan is set to zero. Then if you are comfortable with the new temperature and you are willing to risk, you can use TPFanControl to control your fan so that it won't run below 65C degree (the new temperature).

for another model what the fan does is cooling for cpu but for your model it doing for both cpu and gpu (ATI) so it's will running most time, dont be surprise about it, nothing wrong with it.Bagels4All wrote:Hi,

Yes there is something wrong with it. The fan makes noise, and I'm not willing to listen to this noise all day. Between their shipping delays and this noise issue, I've been stuck with this unusable $1800 machine for close to five months now.asianboyztn wrote: for another model what the fan does is cooling for cpu but for your model it doing for both cpu and gpu (ATI) so it's will running most time, dont be surprise about it, nothing wrong with it.
For the original poster, there is an overheating issue. The fan has to run that fast on an idle system to prevent overheating. If you turn the fan off, you'll see temperature start to climb. With an idle system (98% of the time in C3/C4), it'll be at around 80C in 10-15 minutes. (I've never let it go any higher, though I expect it would.) I've never tried any sort of real work on the machine, so I don't know how it would cope with load, but I suspect not very well.
