On my new T61p 8889-3FG I installed Windows Vista Business x64, but due to the fact my mobile 3G card did not work,
I had to revert to Windows 2003 Server (to use my 4GB

)
All is well after a good weekend of googling ...
but there is one unknown device in my device manager:
SM Bus Controller, when I look at the details it says:
PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3
the device instance id says:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_283E&SUBSYS_20A917AA&REV_03
does anyone have a clue, what this device is and what driver I need to install to fix it?
TIA

Could not give up trying so if anyone is having this same problem:
I found: Intel(R) ICH8 Family SMBus Controller - 283E here:

It is most likely the trusted platform module... TPM.

I see the Atmel TPM device with device id ACPI\ATM1200\4....
Are there 2 TPM devices?

could it be the
empty turbo memory slot or
intel chipset support?
btw, what wireless card are you using under 2003?

turbo mem disabled as described and the chipset wasn't the one either
my 3G card is a local name card (KPN Mobiele Internet Kaart 710), but underneath is a Huawei E620, which was recognised automatically by Windows Server 2003.
I was just told by the Helpdesk Vista x64 is not supported, so I will be on 2003 for a while...

ok now I am not sure any more, I *think* deleted the previous stuff I found and re-ran the chipset install.
the device lists now as:
Intel(R) ICH8 Family SMBus Controller - 283E
driver date: 10-4-2006
driver version: 8.0.0.1008
when I do driver details:
"No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device"
BTW my system seems to behave fine, so is this a problem???

if there are no more yellow exclamation marks in devmgmt then you're ok.
i should have been more specific when i asked about "wireless" -- i mean WLAN, not WWAN. i'm curious if you're using an atheros or intel card.

Intel WiFi 4695AGN, working like a charm on Server 2003

good to know. thank you. wifi and hotkey features are the two things i don't have working in 2003 so i might have to switch to an intel card if i can't find the correct driver for my atheros a/b/g card.
sorry to go even further off-topic here but do you have hotkey features working?
