Black and White bars after resuming from standby

Sometimes, when I put my T60 into standby, upon resuming I get an atlernating pattern of large black and white bars. When this happens, it somtimes appears before the welcome screen, and disappears once that screen comes up (and does not return), or it will come up on my desktop after logging in. Windows, icons will replace it, but the pattern refreshes itself. What is causing this? I do have an ATI X1400, and between this and dealing with their horrible driver package, I am not sure if I will buy another of thier products again (not as though I have much choice in this case).
